Learning to dance
Comments (7)I was thinking about this just this morning when I saw an advertisement for dancing lessons in the local paper. I was about fifteen. My older brother's best friend, Ken Chapman, was very shy and had never learned to dance and neither had I. My brother thought that since Ken knew me he would take lessons if I would go with him. We went to Madame Amy's School of Dancing, a small local dance studio where amidst shelf after shelf of trophy's Madame Amy had earned as a young woman we learned the Quickstep...we learned the Foxtrot and we learned the Waltz. Madame Amy may have thought the Tango and such exotic things from South of the Border to daring for impressionable young minds and they were not offered. Years and years later I met Ken again at my parents' Golden Wedding Anniversary party and we danced once more and found our feet had not forgotten. I have to confess I'm addicted to "Dancing With The Stars" because of my adventures into the world of ballroom dancing....See MoreHigh moisture corn and other stuff. Warning, book length.
Comments (7)Great story!!! Every now and then, my husband will tell about something that happened on the farm.....usually about the war between his father and the mules....I have always wished that he could write them down to the grandchildren to read. Some of the tales are hilarious. Times were hard in South Georgia during the depression years. They had a dog that would hunt rabbits, kill them and bring them to the kitchen door. The family ate a lot of rabbit stew. You didn't waste good meat like that!! Hope you get some good news today about Sis. She will probably have rough day today because of the anesthesia. That can yuck up most anyone!...See MoreWill butterfly bushes survive? You WHAT? My dh's note.

Until I get to it, the area I am replanting gets weeds which neither of us like so he keeps it very short. We were going to cultivate it, but they were calling for rain, which we are really getting over the last few days, and it would have made a muddy mess for the dog to run through. The butterfly bushes are going to be treated as a group planting in an open area. They will be that area's focal point hopefully. My butterfly bushes never reach more than 8', if that. I keep them trimmed to allow for more blooms (on side shoots). Has anyone else ever kept them trimmed to allow for side shoots? Thank you. Comments (31)Typing was required in 9th grade at my Overseas dependents school. Being run by the military where men typed everyone had to learn. Their thinking was all of us were going to college or the military and you would need typing. Smart actually. I sucked big time. As an over achiever sort of student I had perfect grades. I made a D my first semester. I did not get much better. The harder I tried the worse it was. My fingers had minds of their own. It was a mess. Doomed. My sisters are good at it. Still I got a typewriter for graduation. A portable Smith-Corona-in blue of course with the hard case. One of my younger sisters still has it last I heard. You might think this was preparation by my parents for college but my mother did not believe in college for girls. She saw it as a waste of time and money. You were going to get married or some such nonsense. I am not sure why I got a typewriter. I was grateful when computers came along. I know where the backup key is automatically. I spend a good deal of time backing up but I do type much better than I used to. We had electrics in the library at college but I never mastered using one-took a light touch. Fortunately the College of science did not approve of papers for undergrads. They saw them as a waste of professors time. I am not convinced of that. Still I didn't have to do much typing....See MoreElizabeth
