When will philodendron selloum come back?

I planted them last summer. (See long thread in Tropicalesque .) I cleared the mulch off a couple weeks ago, and I'm hoping that wasn't too early. Does anyone have experience on when they return? [Johnnieb - You had some last year. Do you remember when they sprouted back in the Spring?] I'm just anxious to see them again, and I'm hopeful that they survived our mild winter. I don't know about y'all, but the last couple of weeks I've been at my back door, looking at the garden and practically yelling, "Wake up!!"

Here in B'ham, all three of mine have a couple of leaves already....I uncovered them about three weeks ago.

hey in an earlier post of yours I asked you a question about your Tetrapanax sreroidal giant. Did you get yours from Plant Delights? How tall did it get last summer? Has it woke up yet this year? Thanks!

Yes, I got my Tetrapanax steroidal giant at Plant Delights. It got about 5 feet tall - really took off, and the leaves were HUGE (about 3 feet or more)! It died back in the winter, but the main stalk remained. It is back, with leaves about a foot across already, sprouting just from the top. It looks like one of those plants in the background on the pages of a Dr. Seuss book. It sent out a runner that appeared 1-2 weeks ago, about 5 feet away, and that has a couple of leaves low to the ground. I can't see the runner - just the new leaves/plant. If I can figure out how to post photos, I'll do so. (Somebody told me last year, and I have to look up that thread again.) Sorry I never got back to you, but thanks so much for reminding me.

What Danny was indicating is this...the main stem actually CAN be cut when you have these rope-like aerial roots growing out the sides as seen in his pic above. You would want to make sure that the cutting had at least one such root still attached to it. More is better,but the larger a cutting you take,the less material the host plant has to recover with so I would advise taking no more from the top than two or three aerials down(and in some cases even that might be pushing it. The pic below shows an example of where I'd cut mine if I wanted to make another. The underside of your cut stem will not be where the new roots emerge,so dusting the wound with cinnamon can help prevent fungus from growing on it. The new roots will grow from the cut end of the aerial roots,which should be cut long enough to reach the potting mix and get down into it a bit.

All the replies are warmer zones than 6. If tropicalzone in zone 7 brings his/hers inside I guess zone 6 outside in the ground is not a good idea. I have seen them in our Lowes, and thought the same as vent1962. I have an outdoor greenhouse, but it will hardly get warm enough in there for tropicals. All I have are 2 doghouse heaters. I haven't tried them out yet. I think my basement will be their winter home. It's a constant 60+ F in winter with a south facing door. Half the door is clear glass.. I just bought a Bird of paradise today at Lowes. I saw them in Florida last spring and loved them.

Merryd, putting pinestraw over the growing crown of the plant is excellent mulch. My 2 big tubs of philodendron had absolutely NO rot in the crown, and no leaf frostbite either. I banked a mix of leaves and pinestraw around the tubs, and only for freezing weather did I cover the plant tops with a tarp and bubblewrap. This also worked for my Kimberly Queen ferns, the white birds of paradise, a dwarf splitleaf philodendron, nun's orchids, and a variegated ginger. I did the same for my colocasia/alocasia/bananas but their trunks/stems had so much water in them that the outer portions turned to mush. They were all planted in the ground, mulched heavily, wrapped with bubble wrap or surrounded by heavy corrugated box material. Our temps got into the low 20s more frequently and oftener this last winter than I ever remember. However, I lost only 2 bananas and 1 elephant ear.

Hi Carol What a great way to describe how to separate the roots! I have to admit that I am always worried about dividing, getting more plants from one is a good idea. I don't have experience with the variety Xanadu but I tend to think that if you create a warmer micro climate for them, they will survive. As a trial you can always plant one in a pot and when cold you can move it. Good luck with your new plants! Silvia

I am going to try it this year with heavy mulch to see what happens. I am in Zone 7a, but I guess it is worth a try.

Good luck. Mine has grown to over 6 feet now, with lots of leaves. The little one that is coming from the one runner is about a foot tall now. Definitely worth trying.
