Our Food Basics did a complete overhaul and upgrade and installed self-serve checkouts. I was encouraged to go and try them out as I was waiting in line. I refused as I said I like talking to the cashiers.

@Jasdip, yes she is a regular customer and she even bagged her own groceries. The Shoppers Drug Mart near installed self checkouts and they ask if you are paying by debit or credit and they make you use the self checkout. Paying in cash, you can go through the cashier.

My grocery, just three blocks away, closed for good a couple years ago. I mostly miss seeing the people,who,worked there. They had become part of the community and there was a goodbye party for them. I see some of them at another store in the same chain . I try to get in their lines and almost never use self checkout.

I've always avoided the self checkouts, although I know grocers have thin profit margins. (Doesn't Amazon take the cake with *their* grabby 'easy checkout' systems!)

I almost never go to self check out especially if I have a large grocery order or produce to weigh. I want to interact with people. I think it is amazing that the customer's kind gesture happened to occur just when you needed it.

Liira, our Shoppers are so frustrating, they only keep one cashier open, with a long lineup of people waiting; to encourage people to use the self-checkouts.

Our Food Basics new self-checkouts take cash.
