I am looking for a hand mixer that has a "slow" speed. My old one didn't have it and I have my Mom's Cuisinart that doesn't have a slow speed. When I have it at slow it practically throws stuff out of the bowl! Any recommendations?

How timely!! Mine is older than the hills and has been acting wonky for months and started spewing black bits of something and cutting out when I was whipping the cream for pie last night. Time to replace!!

I have a Kitchen Aid stand mixer so only use my hand mixer for whipping cream or beating egg whites. Don't need fancy nor expensive. I am leaning to the Cuisinart 5 speed.......

I have a hand kitchen aid that must be 30 years old. I also have the big kitchen aid that is the basement.

I have a KA and an old hand mixer but I find myself using the Cuisinart stick with a whisk attachment as often as I use those. Officially it is an immersion blender but we all call it the stick. Cuisinart

I also have a GE hand mixer. Bought in 1963. Amazing this little work horse works good as new. Still have box it came in, plus it also had a drink mixer attachment. Guess I hadn’t thought about how old, I am still sewing on my amazing sewing machine that is over 50 years old. Toaster we use everyday was bought in 1963 when we bought mixer. Seems like my new things will last only a few years.

Kathy, I have the same issue with my speedy hand mixer. Even at the lowest speed, it is so fast that batter gets flung out of the bowl. I can only use it if I'm very careful and start and stop it. Sorry for hijacking your thread, Carabubble, but I hope suggestions for your benefit will help me too.

I don't have a suggestion for the mixer, but for the potatoes, this kind of ricer has been recommended in this forum for many years. I heartily endorse it. The price listed seems very high. There are knockoffs also on Amazon Prime which cost less than half.

Since electric beaters can make potatoes go gluey, I'd think finding one that handles most like the one you've been using would be key.

I own a light weight, Toastmaster 5 speed hand held. Just made whipped cream. Here it is online.. I purchased it on a Black Friday sale last year @ Kohls with a mail in rebate. I received $2 MORE than I paid. ☺ I really like it. I don't know how long it will last. Prior to owning this I had a Kitchenaid. The beaters kept falling out. I pitched it.

I also own a heavy duty hand held ricer for potatoes. I've never tried using a mixer for potatoes.

WOW, @plllog the price on that ricer is a goat-choker. My ricer came from Tuesday Morning and was much more reasonable. I think the brand was Danny Seo.

Buy a motor speed controller ( Harborfreight sells for less than $20). It can also be used as a light dimmer.

It will give you variable motor speed from 0 to 100%.

Technically known as PWM speed controller. It will slow down your motor speed without losing torque (power).

bbstx......I can use a regular ricer....my husband can't. ☺ His hands are so massively strong he just twisted my 1st ricer into a bent mess! The 2nd one was trashed as well. The 3rd....was expensive. I still have it.

Note: He also trashed my leather hole punch and my snap setter.

I've never tried it on potatoes, but I haven't brought out my electric hand mixer since I bought this OXO manual mixer. I do have a KA stand mixer for bigger jobs, but this is my go to for things like whipping cream, etc.

I purchased a K/A hand mixer about a year ago and wish I hadn't waited so long. I guess I just thought all hand mixers were carp. I was wrong; the K/A is fabulous!

I mash my potatoes with a hand masher than use a wisk if I want them fluffed up. Both tools can be used for any number of other things.

I have the large, heavy KA that I now rarely use. My hand held is also a KA and it has a nice slow speed too. Highly recommend it.

I've had my 7-speed KitchenAid hand mixer for years...Ultra Power Plus 7. Very low to very high speed. I never use it for mashed potatoes. That job goes to the ricer or hand masher.

I have a Black and Decker that I like. Not heavy and there is a nice low speed that doesn't throw the food out of the bowl.

I prefer hand mashed potatoes to whipped. But I do have that same OXO for light jobs like whipping cream and it's great. Much better than the old hand egg beaters.

The ricer above is fab. Makes quick work of mashing potatoes, especially great for gnocchi.

I have a Cuisinart hand mixer that I bought maybe 5 years ago. I don't use it much but it certainly works better than most. It starts out very slow and gradually the speed can be increased. I wouldn't use it for anything heavy, but it works great for light weight foods.

Several years ago I decided that my BIG Kitchenaid was just too heavy and got the smaller one.... which I really like. However, the power is the same, but the bowl is about half the other and so half recipes are what I can make now.... which is OK.

I mash potatoes with a masher not a mixer. I don't care for the texture when a mixer is used. Don't know why that should make a difference, but it does.

I bought a 5 speed Cuisinart at one of their semi-annual warehouse sales (alas, no more, the warehouse has been sold). I am not impressed with what is supposed to be the slowest speed, as other above have mentioned. Other than the not-so-slow slow speed, it has easy to attach and remove beaters and clean and is easy to handle, but I only paid about $10 US so it mostly works for me.

I have a stick that has a potato masher attachment. I love my ricer, but it hurts my hands. The stick doesn't make the potatoes gluey.

I'm another one to say never use a mixer for potatoes. I just don't like that texture. I have an ancient hand mixer that's been okay, but I recently treated myself to a new (old one got gifted when we moved 5 years ago as I was sure I'd never use it again) KA stand mixer, which is easier to use even for a simple cake than the hand mixer.

After decades of claiming its own kingdom on my limited countertop, I put my KA stand mixer out of a table in the adjacent garage. It is still there ready to be used if I want. And, I do want sometimes and will haul it in.

Since it is just us two old folks here now I don't use it as often as I used to.

I have a small hand mixer that I picked up at a yard sale many years ago and I will bring that out for small jobs. It doesn't have a slow speed, as others have said about theirs.

I have even taken to old fashioned hand kneading of something like a pizza dough or just two loaves of bread. If I plan on doing a lot of loaves, I will bring it in and use it

A friend told me the other day that she, too, has reached this point where the stand mixer has been moved to a remote location because her life just does not have a need for it anymore.

I have one of those old fashioned egg beaters from the early 60s I think. It is amazing how well built that thing is. It turns beautifully and is so smooth.

One big problem with those is that they are not good to beat really thick cake batter with and you have to use two hands on the beater , but you need another to hold the mixing bowl, usually.

That makes them really best to beat............eggs, cream and other liquid stuff. It is not well equipped to beat most cake batters.

I have used my KA stand mixer for breads, for the most part. Now, I will just do it by hand most times. Not a big deal. I find the non cluttered space to be more useful than the stand mixer was now that life has changed. But, I have great praise for my old KA mixer. It served me well.

Both my stand mixer and hand mixer are Kitchen Aid. I wouldn't trade them in for the world.

I love my KA hand mixer. It has 7 speeds. Low is low.

I also have a KitchenAid stand mixer and a KitchenAid hand mixer. Also a KitchenAid food processor. I like them all very much.

I did use the mixer to mash potatoes yesterday, and it worked fine. I like my mashed potatoes a little thicker and chunkier, made with a hand masher, but my girls like them smooth and creamy, so I use the hand mixer when I'm making potatoes for them.

My 8 year old granddaughter is a mashed potato monster, she will eat three helpings of mashed potatoes and pass up dessert for more mashed potatoes!

I have one similar to this one. But in white, mine is so old it looks different.

I bought a KA hand mixer a few years ago and the beaters were cr@p so returned it and got a cuisinart. But it only had one speed. Perhaps I should revisit the KA. I will definitely look for something with varying speeds.

Carabubble, I don't mean to butt in, but, I, too, am wanting a good hand mixer, but the reviews, (except for the ones that are being compensated for their reviews) are pretty bad across the board, including KA. I think the older ones were probably fine, but does anyone on this thread have one they have purchased in the last year or two that they love?

Mine is several years old and I bought it at a yard sale so who knows how old it actually is.
