Comments (8)Claudia, just a suggestion but if you start your own thread re ID of your possible PP, more people will likely see it. Sometimes some of the same people don’t return to a thread once they have posted a comment. I’m hoping dhaven comes back to this post to answer you... I answered a question of yours under the GE thread of lecorps but it should have its own thread (to reach as many forum members as possible). Don’t hesitate to create your own ID threads... we like the challenge of trying to ID and it keeps us sharp :-)...See MoreHarvesting white pineapples vs. gold pineapples
Comments (3)Thanks for the replies. I found the answer to my question. I don't know if I have this variety, but I picked the pineapples based on the info. So tasty! None of them had the fruity aroma. The photo is of the largest one. The back side was much greener, but had some yellow spots. https://kauaisugarloaf.com/pages/about-pineapple How to know if a Sugarloaf Pineapple is ripe The perfectly ripe Kauaʻi Sugarloaf Pineapple will be mostly a rich green color with yellow dots in the center of the eyes. The eyes should be fully developed and look swollen, not flat, with a yellow center. At the very least, the yellow dots in the center of the eyes should be evident around the base of the fruit. At a glance, the flesh of Kauaʻi Sugarloaf is rich green and the outside flesh will feel much harder than other pineapple, even though the inside of Sugarloaf is softer, it has been described as creamy with no strings and with an edible core. es the same size will be sweeter. Sugar weighs more than water, hence a really sweet fully ripened pineapple is heavier than a unripe pineapple of the same size. Kauaʻi Sugarloaf is much sweeter and hence it will feel heavy for its size. Sugarloaf Pineapple is the lowest acid, sweetest, most delicious and fullest flavored pineapple. MYTH: The ability to pull a leaf from the crown, the top of the pineapple, as an indication of ripeness is complete myth, despite the enduring popularity of this falsehood....See Morehas anyone had success overwintering pineapple lilies or cannas in 6a?
Comments (4)I've had mixed results overwintering cannas in zone 6b (central Kentucky). One year I covered dormant tubers with ample straw mulch and then a tarp covering. Though the seasonal lows were only in the single digits (zone 7a equivalent), nearly all tubers failed to survive the winter. On the other hand, I've successfully overwintered one canna variety (100% survival) with only a thick covering of straw mulch, through both single digit and -9F winters. The keys seem to be, aside from susceptibility to cold which may vary between varieties, having a breathable mulch layer over well-drained soil. Persistent cold and damp with fluctuating temps promoting frost heaving are the enemy. A protected location, for instance up against a south-facing house wall would help. I'll be expanding efforts to overwinter cannas here in '23-24. The labor of digging up tubers after a couple hard freezes, removing soil, packing them in peat moss in large tubs and hauling them into cool storage appeals less and less. Experimenting with inexpensive canna varieties in-ground would be a good way to start....See Moreplllog
