Hi, I am a chef and cook a lot. I have a brand new Miele range, a whynter steam countertop oven in my pantry (which is fantastic, espcially for steaming) and I purchasee the sharp convection/air fry microwave drawer. The time it takes to reheat something is double what my last microwave was. I heated a bowl of soup and it took 8 minutes. I used the covection bake mode to cook 4 baked potatoes and after one hour,,,it still didn't cook them through. I had to use my miele range to finish them. I was so excited to purchase this microwave and now I'm dissapointed. I will call a tech next week to see if there is something wrong. It was a lot of money and the "cut out" in the cabinets are much larger than a standard microwave, so I feel kind of stuck now with this appliance. Huge Upset! Also,,,,as I am reading comment I saw the post about not toasting as it should. I agree. One side gets toasted and you have to flip it over! Its not even and it's a pain in the $%^#$$%

My Frigidaire wall ovens have air fry mode. I tied strings to the oven racks to compare the air movement between the two modes. AF mode definitely had more activity. But how would this affect practical results? And how would they compare to my countertop appliances? I decided to test with frozen chicken nuggets, attempting to adjust the settings to achieve similar actual temps, if anything wanting to give convection the advantage. Ninja XL. Set at 375, even after a solid preheat my Thermworks Smoke showed it had way overshot to about 450 after putting in two nuggets before coming back down. I didn’t go so far as to chart the temps to calc an average, but I did watch time and temp and by my estimation it averaged around 410 over the ten minutes cook time. The nuggets came out dark and crisp, overdone I’d say with internal temps right about 212. The Breville Smart Oven (convection) was hard to control. Although well preheated, the temps swung up and down considerably, with 410 being too hot and 400 being too cool. I flipped back and forth manually between these two settings over the ten minutes to best average 410, again, if anything giving the convection the benefit of higher temps. The nuggets came out mushy***, not crisp at all, with an internal temp of about 185. I set one wall oven to air fry and one to convection. After a long preheat, cheapo bimetal oven thermometers showed again showed AF to be high so I lowered it to 375. At this point both ovens sat just a bit over 400. After ten minutes the nuggets from each looked about the same as they had out of the Breville, arguably both just a touch dryer than the BSO. Interestingly the internal temps varied in the opposite way of what I expected: the AF nuggets were about 175 and the convection ones were about 185. Are there flaws in my experiment? Absolutely. For one thing I didn’t allow three of the four appliances to behave as they were engineered to based on their settings. And secondly I obviously didn’t cook any of these all to their optimal finish. What I do believe I did show though, is that my dedicated countertop AF did exactly what these appliances are advertised to do, and that is cook quickly and provide a crisp exterior. The other appliances, not so much. Clear difference. My son has a Cuisinart toaster oven with air fry, if I think of it maybe I’ll add it to this list when it comes home from college this summer. ***WTactualF has happened to Tyson chicken nuggets? We don’t eat a ton of them but for many years I’ve kept them around for a quick snack if there’s nothing else around. The past couple bags have been entirely inedible. They’re either complete mush or complete sawdust. I threw out one bag, returned another, and now am on my third bag which is equally disgusting. I’m done.

@Monique: "They are...terrible microwaves" In CR's tests, as a group over-the-range microwave ovens performed just as well as countertop models. While it didn't achieve a recommended rating, the LG MHEC1737F with air fry (Best Buy, Home Depot) performed reasonably well in its tests. @cpartist: "It's actually dangerous to have an over the stove microwave." There are millions of OTR microwave ovens installed. Provide proof of this statement.
