I think you can use the round Hooker table between the sofa and chair, and then look for a long, narrow, stained wood table for the other end of the sofa, to echo the warmth of the leather chair. Center the glass coffee table on the sofa. An alternative for the open end of the sofa is a floor lamp instead of an end table. Your rug is beautiful.

You all are amazing! Everdebz, I’m torn on straight v curved. You make a great point about the other straight elements in the room – I hadn’t thought about that. Here’s a picture of the current tables. There’s a lot of wood in the room — floors, trim, furniture and open stairs. I’m hoping to brighten things up a bit.

Tedbixby, that bird table is amazing! I love birds, too. A table like that would add so much happy color. Would the rust table below work the same way? I don’t have much confidence mixing tables but it seems it could be a more modern look than symmetrical tables and lamps?

Calidesign, thank you, I love that rug. When my daughters not home, it’s the best thing in the house :-). Your suggestion really has me intrigued —putting the slightly oversized Hooker table would let me squeeze it in, without completely crowding the room. The other side of the couch is the side you see when you come in from the foyer so it seems like your idea would make for a nice balance. Is it OK to have tables in three different shapes? And do you think it matters that the Hooker table would be pretty much the same height as the chair arms? Like I said, I don’t have a lot of confidence!

I ordered two of these Friday, but I’m going to try to cancel them so I can think about the ideas you and Calidesign brought up around asymmetry, with different tables on each side and maybe a floor lamp as you mentioned. I don’t have a chair in mind yet, just thinking upholstered and inviting. I think the rocker is a grand old throne, but guests never pick it to sit in. Back when we had guests, that is.

I have my great grandmothers wedding rocker from my great grandfather (1800's) and no one ever sits in it either except my mother. I think because it is "different" a person isn't drawn to sit in it. It's fine for the end table to be the same height as the chair arms. I actually like your current end table with the thin legs, on the left in the photo. You could keep that with the round Hooker table on the other end, or have you considered painting your reddish table that sits between your sofa and chairs? Before you decide for sure on the end tables you should decide whether or not you want two lamps in the room.

Please post a pic if you have time, I’d love to see it. The couch faces the NFP and arch into the dining room. The LR is a small walk-through, with little room between the furniture and NFP. I did cancel those lamps.

Calidesign, thank you for the reassurance on table heights — that makes the Hooker table a possibility. When you mention putting that table between the leather chair and couch, are you thinking pulled forward from the corner? (v. flanking the couch end)

My pictures aren’t clear, and the glass coffee table is reflecting a lot of red from the cherry end tables. They’re well made and in good shape with a few scuffs to the tops. I could paint one, absolutely.

Is a table a necessity on the other end of the sofa with the coffee table there? Another thought is that if it isn't then a small side table without a lamp next to the new chair might be a consideration. And then a heftier floor lamp without a table in front of it. As far as that "new" lamp you already have I'm guessing it isn't a very good reading lamp because of the dark shade that puts the light down rather than outward? Also, if you go with the Hooker table, I think you want something that doesn't have a similar finish which would add another texture and visual interest.

Whoa.. on my monitor your original photo and others the sofa looks yellow but the photo with the new lamp in it looks like the sofa is cream.

You mention that you would consider refinishing or painting your existing end tables. Should we explore that more before you do anything? If so, I noticed your black picture frames so would painting one or both black be something to consider? Do you have a black towel or something black that you could drape over the table to see how it looks?

Since you want two lamps, I would look for larger teal ceramic based ones with white or cream shades. I didn't realize your end tables were the same with the reflection. Honestly, there is nothing wrong with them, and they fit the room well. I would just switch out the lamps. It's a nice room. You can keep the rocker too, unless it isn't comfortable. If it was my space, I would put the budget toward new blinds, in a neutral linen color.

Everdebz, thank you for the finds! I love your sense of color! And I do like natural textures. It might be backwards, but I’d like to pin down the tables and lamps first. I really like to try my seating in person so I plan to look for a chair locally. You’re giving me lots of inspiration!

tedbixby, I’d like to have both sides of the couch set for comfy reading, with a handy spot to set a beverage. With the coffee table being oval, it doesn’t feel within easy reach if that makes sense. The light is falling here and I think you’re right that the brass lamp isn’t bright enough, though it has two bulbs. Great point about not putting that finish on the Hooker table; the lamp is also a bit short. I will try draping something black on one of the tables, great approach to trying that color out! I would be up for possibly painting and keeping one, but probably not both — they don’t hurt, but they don’t seem to up the look either.

Based on your needs, I think 2 end tables with 2 lamps and no floor lamp would be the way to go. See how the black looks and then we'll go from there.

Definitely open to ideas like the gorgeous China chest you found. Sorry I overlooked your couch color question the first time. It’s what I would call a wheat or putty color. It’s more pigmented than cream, closer to tan, and not yellow. I hope that helps, I wish I had a better way to describe it. Thank you for your ideas, you are a creative!

Ok, I'll save my monkey for another OP or maybe myself.:) The reason I said 2 table lamps rather than a floor lamp is because you mentioned you wanted a side table on each end and the more I thought about your space and it's size, I changed my mind from when I posted the bird table. Though I may change my mind once the side tables are decided upon. Which is probably where we should focus 1st to keep things simplified.

Though I have a better idea of the color of your sofa I was going to suggest that during the day to try and take a photo of it in daylight with the window coverings up but I think WI is cloudy tomorrow (snow?) as that is what you guys are sending me over here in MI!

Any of your lamp options could work, if the sizing is large enough. I like the lamps with some curve to the shade rather than the straight rectangles due to your square mirror and lines in your window treatments.

The tables aren’t playing nice with the window treatments though. Reddish undertone? Not sure. In any case saved enough money on the tables to try for new blinds, as Calidesign suggested. These lamps should arrive in a few weeks:

But today, the painter started! Taking a wild departure from my color addiction, with SW White Duck. Excited and scared! Need to start a thread for advice on painting stair trim. We have been sticking very close to home for nine months now and it feels soooooo good to be making it a little nicer. Thank you all for helping me feel more confident. You guys are amazing!
