I read for north facing bedrooms, in general, try to avoid grays, violets, most blues. Is that color (white rain) too blue for that room? Is it too closely matched to the comforter? (it's a very pretty color!)

White Rain looks pretty dark as posted above. I wonder about a color that matches your nightstand or a very light version of White Rain. You could also get creative and find some fabrics in colors that you like, hang them up on the wall to try them in different light (day and night), and when you find what you like take them to BM and have them match it. Good luck!

Night stands are technically "antique white" - would a cream of some sort look good or i should stay away from yellows?

On BM's website, white rain is the lowest/lightest shade - i suppose i could ask them to lighten by at least 50%?

It also showed BM Barely Beige 1066 pairs well with white rain. Would this color or a lighter shade of this color work?

I have a friend with a north facing front room, which has a bamboo hedge in the garden only about 10feet from the front window, so pretty subdued available light.

She has Farrow & Ball Borrowed Light on walls and ceiling.

Every time I visit I always pop my head around that door as I love the colour in all lighting. It becomes even more silvered at night.

Even if these bluey-greens don’t quite do it for you, please don’t be put off by stuff you read on blogs about window direction. You can choose colours successfully for a North facing room from EVERY Hue Family.

The secret? Finding the right combination of Value + Chroma (Lightness + Colorfulness) to best fit the available light.

Very low Chroma, near neutral whites can fall a bit flat and greyed in dim light, so whites with somewhat more Chroma do better.

If you do choose a white of off-white, think carefully how it might pair with the carpet colour.

Marylee H - is the top wheel picture suggested off white/white colors that would work due to more chroma? I'd definitely like to stay away from anything that suggests icy/cool; I am not opposed to blues/greens - in fact, those are my favorite colors! Can you show that circular wheel of suggested colors with warm undertones/high chroma for other wall color options? I really like visuals like that. Thank you.

Your bedding's colour name of aloe reminds me that BM has a colour named Healing Aloe. This blog post describes it in different light (with pictures). You might want to have a look at it since you do like blue/greens. My main suggestion to you though is choose your wall colour last, once all the elements and lighting are done and in place. The artificial lighting will affect how you perceive the wall colour. And don't be influenced by how things look on your screen: devices very rarely render colours true. Get those paint samples in the actual room to view in the actual light throughout the day. I have a Mac that's supposed to be very reliable when it comes to colour rendering but every paint colour that intrigued me from a manufacturers' website (especially Ben Moore's!) looked VERY different irl. I've wasted a lot of time "researching" paint colours through Internet pictures. Descriptions can be wonderfully inspiring but we have to be careful about falling in love with the pictures online.

Marylee's advice makes sense and Barb's idea of using fabrics as inspiration is a good one as well. Sometimes "rules" about choosing room colours according to light exposure limit us too much. Best to use them as guidelines or starting points. My bedroom is north-east facing and I ended up a very light blue (on the cool side) for over 12 years. The LRV was around 75, if memory serves. That's what helped "lift" the space, imo.

tartanmeup - yes, i will definitely be heading out to the paint shop to first browse/pick up paint chip samples and once narrowed down, some actual paint on the walls to get a better idea of what looks good. I've always done this in the past with previous rooms.

Regarding use of fabrics as inspiration - i'm really really bad with picking out color combos - so i need all the help i can get, alot of ideas/starting points, etc.

Any specific suggestions regarding wall art that would go well with the bedding/furniture? (what color combo should I try and find)? Any specific examples one could find online?

Completely off topic - i would love to put my 32'' TV (wall mount) in this room - any suggestions on location?

I think I'm leaning towards a "pretty" brown color - any specific recommendations? (don't want too dark)

Hi - China Doll is that bit lighter than Shaker Beige and also much more neutral. It may read a little airier than Shaker Beige. They both may have a sense of peachiness to their warmth, due to their location over near to the Yellow-Red Hue family.

You will need to check them against headboard and carpet to ensure the paint sits well alongside. For example if your carpet is pinky and the walls more peachy, how do you like them together?

Both colours may flash purpleish in imbalanced lighting, so view samples in both light and shadow.

Received the headboard/bed finally - not quite as pictured online (darker with more brown in person). Tried taking a picture:

Looked at paint samples - given the headboard is neutral, our sitting bench will be neutral (tannish), the nightstands antique white, and carpet is brown/greige, I now am thinking a neutral wall color (either cream/ivory, brown/beige/tan) will be too boring. I don't want the headboard to blend into everything.

Am back to exploring something with just enough color for the north facing room but nothing too bold. I think I like the green family and am going to pick up some more paint samples.

Some I saw online that I want to see in person include: BM sage tint, hollingsworth green; SW liveable green, sea salt, rainwash, etc.

Any recommendations on specific green paints that would work in this room with my items?

All these colours are lovely and not unrelated to your first request for the room.

But all have the capacity for shifting blue under certain imbalanced lighting conditions.

From top-to-bottom you are moving anti-clockwise on the Color Strategist Wheel.

So should you find the top one shifts blue in your room, moving anticlockwise may lessen the effect. So start with the one you like most and sample under your own conditions,

Marylee H I picked up any green paint chip sample I could find at SW and BM.

So far, I seem to really like BM chocolate chip (436) and jack and the beanstalk (442).

They appear in my very dark north facing bedroom to have enough color to them without screaming too bold; They don't appear gray or blue which I like - a pretty light sagey true green if you will.

I will get some paint samples, paint on posterboard and see how the real paint looks in there.

Is there a huge difference between these 2 colors?

Hi. Not much difference between the two. Mint Choc Chip is the slightly lighter & more colourful of the two. Perceptually, 442 may read as a little touch greener.

They both belong to the Green-Yellow Hue Family.

Marylee H After looking at the samples throughout the day (we actually had sun!) and evening - the mint choc chip is out. Husband likes these colors 1. BM light pistachio (2034-60) - his favorite and what we're leaning towards; not sure if this is too dark??

Which one of these 3 do you think would work best in our bedroom?

Personally I find light pistachio a bit too colourful, but only you know how it reads in your light. Of those you mentioned I prefer Fleeting Green. It’s less colourful than Pistachio.

It's a guest room, right? What type of feeling do you want in the room? Low contrast usually evokes calm while contrast can be more energizing. This article talks about contrast in rooms. It's not about a colour being "wise" necessarily; it's about how you want the room to look and feel. There's more than one way to create a great looking room.

Are the furnishings all set up in the space? How does everything look and feel? If you're having difficulty picturing a different colour on the wall, try tapping up a white sheet behind the nightstand to see how a light wall colour would fare.

A neutral off-white might offer the most flexibility should you wish to change the bedding later on.
