Exterior Paint, Trim and Rail? Advice Needed
Comments (5)The house is a mid-century rustic ranch. I love rustic ranch homes and think people ruin them trying to make it something it's not. When you say "retro/midcentury style of your dreams" what does that mean? If it's mid-century modern, that will take a lot of money. My ideas if I owned the house: I would remove the security door. Remove the fence. If you want a fence, I would do a painted rustic split rail. The original windows are fantastic and give it charm. Will you be using the garage to park cars? If you could take some driveway space and add stairs coming out facing the street, I think that will give you a better looking entrance. Incorporating the used brick from the driveway would be in keeping with the style. A new, carriage style garage door would look nice. Paint the downspouts the same color as the house siding so they blend in....See MoreExterior Handrail
Comments (15)jmdkc , sorry I wasn't trying to tell you how to parent, I was telling you the planter should be a non issue. Your kids are young. You have quite a few years before they will be on the front stoop unsupervised. Then you can decide. If your agent is paying for a new railing then have them pay for it then. I think the wood railing fits in with your wood siding. A high end railing will look out of place on a average middle class house....See MorePlease help choose front porch/deck color for our pale yellow house
Comments (2)You could paint the railing and the skirt that same yellow as the house. Or white. Or stain it to match the brick - a medium brown. Paint the deck in a deck paint in a light gray. I think the blue, while pretty is a bit too intense for the yellow, which quite lovely. What about this blue? I would paint the frame around the window blue, too....See MoreFront Porch Railing
Comments (11)Brenda, your comment to @Beverly made me think of my front porch which also faces West so I know what you mean about the heat! My suggestion is to install an external roll up solar shade. We got ours at Lowe’s for @ $100 a few years ago & it’s added so much value & flexibility to our use of front porch for such a small amount of $$ as house item purchases go. It is mounted behind the eve trim board & happened to be available in the same color so it is invisible when rolled up. Shade comes in multiple colors so one is sure to be good match to most houses. Our porch is ground level - poured with sidewalk so we don’t have a railing to attach it to. We drove spikes into ground & attached bungee cords to stakes - the hook at other end of cord attached to shade when rolled down - shade is @10’ long I think. You could roll part way down & attach to railing with hooks that come with shade or all the way & attached to deck. If breeze or wind not an issue then it can free hang. Again, this shade really expanded our use of our front porch! You can see through the shade a bit & it’s surprising how much cooler the porch is....See Moreblessdmum
