Need help with Hall and Stairway Runner
Comments (7)You have to be careful about starting and stopping before the very last step (actually the hallway floor) depending upon how thick the runner is. Believe it or not, neuromucularly your feet are "programmed" after each has taken one step up or down. You should actually be ok, the more problematic situation is when there is bare stairs and carpeting at the top: since it is a "higher" step, due to the carpet thickness it can trip you up sometimes. What could potentially happen here is that your food expects to meet the step before it actually does since the last step is "lower" due to the absence of carpet. If you notice this you could place an area rug at the top....See MoreNew stair runner project
Comments (20)I keep thinking about the animal print...could I really be so daring?? I am also drawn to the antelope one, though I also really like the 4th one that Kellie posted (with the green walls). I'm going to bring home a sample and see how it looks. I have two carpet stores in mind that I'll visit later this week. I'm a little concerned about how the brown animal prints will look with the tile floor. I also kinda like this Nourison one since I have a thing for polka dots. One of my dogs is white and she's the worst shedder, so I can't go too dark because the fur will show like crazy. On the other hand, I don't want to go too light (even though we are mostly a no-shoes-in-the-house family!). I just need to get out there and bring some samples home. I'm so excited to do this -- I have been so tired of this rug for so long! Here is a link that might be useful: Nourison runner...See MoreRunner Installed! Another Small Step :-)
Comments (32)Stairs and code are tricky. If it's a new build, the stairs have to meet the code. However, in older houses, they are grandfathered in (like in my house) because the stairs were built around the structure of the house that was already in place, before the new codes. So, for example, I did have a builder come over to look at the stairs to see if they could be pulled out in order to have deeper treads, but it cannot be done. Cape Cod has a LOT of these kinds of stairs, so it's kind of expected. Ironically, they're safer for children. But adults have to come down them sideways. So far, no one has fallen down the stairs, and like I said, they're not slippery because they've been treated for that very purpose. You have to deal with what you have! But, stairs are almost impossible to "bring up to code"....See MoreCarpet runner width and finishing
Comments (13)We recently had a runner installed when we were expecting our now 5 month old baby. Our 10 year old dog (Lab/Border Collie mix) had been having a really hard time with the stairs and with a new baby on the way it made sense. The dog did exactly what your installer said-he tried walking on the edge of the stair treads to avoid the carpet but he caught on quickly with a little coaching and encouragement from us. Before the runner was installed we had to hold his collar and walk slowly down with him but now he runs up and down the stairs like a pup again. I wish we had done it sooner and I love the look. Ours is a grayish/beige sculpted carpet and they matched the serging to the carpet. So far no issues with the edging holding up to two cats and the dog. We did buy enough extra raw carpet (not serged) to replace any damaged areas in case it is ever discontinued or unavailable....See MoreRelated Professionals
