Paint new douglas fir porch columns before winter?

A contractor installed new porch columns made of untreated douglas fir. The contractor suggested we prime and paint the columns asap to protect against the winter elements. Unfortunately here in Canada we are already having cold weather dipping below 32oF (0oC) most nights, so the paint companies we have talked to have said it is too cold to paint and we should simply wait till next spring to paint, and that the douglas fir can weather 1 winter season.

Suggestions? Should we paint the columns to at least provide some protection, or not paint and hope the wood can make it through the winter?
