Question re Douglas fir, trim, and aesthetics
Comments (12)Thank you very much for your input. lzerac -- your beam sounds beautiful, as do the bamboo sills. Really nice details! virgilcarter -- our house probably is best described as transitional. We have tried to stay true to the original Concept (is that the Parti?) but there's always been a bit of tension between the architect (who leans modern) and the family (which leans traditional). We like the lines of primitive/Shaker but not peeling paint, and "utilitarian" is a good word to describe the "style" (or lack thereof). dadereni -- thanks, we might go this direction with natural/stained windows and painted trim. It might look odd where we have transoms, so we will work with the architect to try to be coherent and consistent. The manufacturer for most of the windows is Loewen, we have a few Marvin in-swings. I wanted to say again how much I appreciate the opinions. We are on the hourly part with the architect so it's really wonderful for us to be able to have a sense of whether or not we're way off base before we go back to the architect for more. It's been a great collaboration thus far, just not inexpensive. So . . . THANK YOU!!!!...See MoreStaining a Douglas Fir Entry Door
Comments (8)Actually, I suspect the literature that comes with doors these days is written in a way that makes it hard to comply with the instructions so that when you have a complaint, they can say hey it's your fault you didn't use a SealerStain! You do not need a stain. You can just apply the varnish directly to the wood, but be aware that the oil varnishes have come amber color so the color of the door will change so test it at the bottom first to make sure you will like it. You can use the exterior varnish inside but this is not really necessary as the interior varnish will be durable enough. The main problem with using the exterior varnish is the smell and it also takes many hours to dry....See MoreDouglas Fir OK for exterior painted door?
Comments (10)Simpson, Jeldwen, Rogue Valley, Lemieux, are all "veneered" doors today and all are available in all the basic species. This goes for Interior or Exterior. Theonly thin you will get soolid wood any more is from a custom shop and allot of them will be veneer now as well. The better exterior veneered doors are using LVL for the stiles and rails so the veneer type is purely cosmetic....See MoreMarvin Sliding Glass Door - Pine vs. Fir Interior
Comments (3)Awwww, Tedi0555, I was all set to choose the Pine. I am going to be painting the wood, and my installer (who's been installing Marvin for 20 years) said essentially the same as what Eastbay10 wrote above. Furthermore, the salesman for the Marvin sliding french door also told me pine would be the better choice if I am painting, and I know he stands to make less commission if I don't get the upgrade to fir! My installer and the salesman agreed that fir, as you said, is more durable and stable. However, they both said it would likely take 12-15 years for those differences from pine to become apparent. I figured that I don't know where I'll be 12-15 years from now; maybe in this house, maybe not. So I think I'll go with the pine. Anyone else want to convince me one way or the other? I am pulling the trigger on this order on Monday....See Moredough71
