My goodness Tracy, your roses are stunning! I’ve had mine for several years and so far have only pruned the canes that have died and trimmed some that have gotten really long. I guess I treat mine as a climber, but I’m not very good at it. I love this rose, the blooms and fragrance are both lovely. I’m sure someone who knows what they’re talking about will chime in! Do you get any repeat bloom from yours? Mine has a good spring flush, and occasionally a few blooms later in the season.

@Sara: your Mme Ernest Calvat looks gorgeous. Mine has good first flush during spring too and few blooms after. In fall it starts blooming again. Since I haven’t pruned it since last year, its canes are getting too long now. I wonder if I trim them back it will affect its blooming. Does yours have blackspot often?

Pruning would depend on what you're going for. Do you want it to climb? Then just prune out dead wood and give it support and let it get tall. If you want it to be more of a shrub than prune it back in the spring and let it get bushy. Either way the more you get it to spread sideways the more bloom you'll get.
