Update on using the formal dining room...
Comments (25)Love how you've personalized the dining room. It's lovely.. more importantly, the time you spend together in it is lovely. I grew up in a family where we were expected to eat dinner together IN the dining room. It became harder and harder as we got older and had work/sports schedules but it was important enough to my parents that we often ate late to accommodate schedules. There was no tv and topics HAD to be enjoyable and respectful. So many of my friends' families ate in front of the tv .. and you can be sure I grumbled about it many times.. but as an adult, I cherish those family dinners each night. it sounds like your family does too!...See MoreHelp creating modern living room using Queen Anne couches
Comments (40)When you retell the story of how they came to be yours, it seems that you had more of an option to reject them than you originally related. I suggest that you exercise that option. I had one such sofa for many years that was bequeathed to me via my parents who got it from some antique dealer. It was a real old one with horsehair in the cushions. I even paid to have it reupholstered. I always hated it and finally got rid of it. I tell my kids to just tell me when they don't want something. Actually, I am extremely mindful of passing anything down to them. They have their own stuff. If they want it, they can have it when I am gone. I'll bet that even Queen Ann, herself, would not like these overly ornate and supremely uncomfortable seats. I'll bet that even she would get rid of it and have what she wanted. LOL!! Have the inlaws gone on to a more modern style while leaving their old one for you? That might make some sense if you are just starting off in life, but you seem to indicate that you are not still standing on the starting line. You are not going to get where you want to go via their aesthetics. And, as others have advised, don't build it in....See More1957 Kitchen - Open or closed? Updated or vintage?
Comments (25)I am also of the opinion that I don't like to see a vintage bungalow made into open concept. I would keep the kitchen wall intact. On the other hand, I don't find the vintage cabinets either practical or attractive (believe me when I tell you that I am a sucker for most vintage design details, but not this one!) They waste space and restrict function. So you will have to remove a lower to install a dishwasher -- 18" instead of 24". Or get a portable one that you can stow in the space between the frig and cabinets. You could do as someone suggested and find a cabinetmaker to build "matching" cabinets to wrap into the wasted space. You could also build a wooden counter that bridges the space (and would be a cubby for a portable dishwasher and a rollout cart.) Or the between the stud pantry. If it were mine, I would replace the cabinets with vintage/classic looking, frameless new ones, in a layout that maximizes the space, in a vintage-y color. A new counter to go with as well. A thought -- do you need the back door? or perhaps, could close it up where it is and change one of the windows into a door? In order to give you more room to add a dishwasher and still have the storage. I have a wood floor in my kitchen and like it. No problems -- it is 70 years old and was hidden under original linoleum....See MoreHow would you update this family room?
Comments (71)If you're leaning towards keeping some of the original features like the brown trim, there's definitely a way to make it work without painting everything white. You could consider adding a neutral or earthy paint color to the walls to complement the brown trim, making it feel more intentional and cohesive. As for the paneling, if it comes off easily, that might open up the room and modernize it, but if it’s a hassle, painting it could be a great solution. A muted green could look fantastic against the wood tones, bringing in a natural feel that’s both calming and stylish. As you're making these changes, don’t forget the little details that can make a big difference. Updating the shelving by either removing them or giving them a fresh coat of paint could also modernize the space. And, if you're dealing with any large items or debris during the renovation, a service like junk hauling Indianapolis can be a lifesaver to keep your project moving smoothly without clutter piling up....See MoreRelated Professionals
