Trail, I know nothing about the fabric, however I do know how messy little ones can be. To protect the sofa, even from finger prints, get a blanket, sheet, anything to throw over it while they're there.

We do that for shedding dogs, and when company comes (or used to!) we'd pull it off.

I assume you have the sofa that was upholstered with the 18 yards. If so, how long have you had it? If it is new, I would spray it with Scotchgard to protect it. If it is not completely clean, then this might not help so much.

Here is some good information on caring for velvet. Personally, I have avoided velvet upholstery, although I do have velvet drapes and pillows.

Velvet that is 79% poly 21% viscose should resist color change or fading - the viscose could fade if exposed to sunlight. Part of that depends on what color it is, as some colors fade more easily than others. Polyester is generally fiber dyed (if the fabric is a solid color), and this type of dyeing is very stable. The problem with polyester (especially velvet or chenille) when used for upholstery is that it can create static cling, depending on what you are wearing when you sit on it and what the soles of your shoes are.

I'm not sure you need the extra 10 yards, unless you want to make matching pillows and/or covers for the arms and/or back of the sofa. I generally do put covers on the arms of my sofas, as they tend to get dirty more than other areas of the sofa.

It is good to vacuum velvet upholstery regularly, using the brush attachment on your vacuum cleaner - or you can use a small hand-held vacuum.

She bought the 18 yrd and has 1 left . Thank you for the info as far as the fabric no static cling noticed so that’s great! The sofa reupholstered in 2018 and has been in use in her home since then. It looks great and no fading. The only reason I thought about buying the 10 yrds was if I needed to have substantial reupholstery done on it in the future. Definitely cheaper if I already had the fabric . This wasn’t a cheap purchase but certainly not as much as a new one of this quality.

there isn’t any fading at present after 3 yrs. I’ll wait and see how much they want for the 10 yrds. I don’t know that I want covers but could have those made from the 1 yrd she’s giving to me. Thank you for the link!

Ten yards wouldn't be enough to cover the sofa and, even if they began as the same dye lot, time will change the color enough that it wouldn't match new.

The only reason I would buy any extra fabric is if you want to make a throw to cover in the same fabric. If you wanted to do that, make sure you line the reverse side with something that won't damage the upholstery. Otherwise it wouldn't really be of any use.

Ok I'll just let her mail me the one yard and use it as a test piece if ever i have to clean a spot off the sofa. Hopefully not ever needed. The cushions are full coverage both sides with nice zippers so all I was thinking was if I had enough extra in case I ever had to have a new cover made . Has never happened in all my years of kids and sofas and pets so just watch it happen now LOL ! Thank you everyone c
