What's the proper way to judge counter/backsplash, cabinet colors
Comments (41)No worries on the hijacking. This thread ended up way more interesting than it started and got to the crux of the matter, even if I didn't realize that's I was really asking. The consensus thing is interesting and so right on. I am constantly looking for validation for my choices. I consider this to be a character flaw and I'm trying to change my ways. So the way I deal with things is to not tell anyone what our decision is (well other than a few people like the friend who has been weighing in on design decisions for years and people who I know will nod politely even if they hate it). It is easier for me to be all confident and take on the attitude of "it's my kitchen and therefore the opinions of my DH and I are the only that matter" when I've not opened myself up to hearing negative comments (real and perceived) about our choices. The second I hear something negative it takes a little joy out of it for me. Like I said, it's a character flaw. That's why I don't ask for opinions on GW unless I REALLY want to know the good the bad and the ugly of it. Because people here are honest. That's a good thing, by the way, because it's the kind of honestly you won't get from the "oh that's nice" nodders and sometimes you really need that. You'll notice, for instance, that I never came back to this thread to mention what the decision actually was or to report that I did make one (thankfully just a few days after starting this thread so I could move on with my life). People here tend to be much more positive when they see a kitchen finished not only because they see the whole vision completed but also because they realize that it's not changing now so there is no need to say anything but positive comments (that reaffirm those pesky decisions). The nightmare: a finished kitchen post that only gets a handful of comments because you know people are doing the whole "if you can't say something nice, don't say anything." And of course that's when you wish you had asked for some truthful opinions while you were making the decisions....See MoreWhite cabs, black counters & a backsplash other than white?
Comments (17)FYI, here are some of my inspiration photos. I love the red accents in this first one (my compliments to SoonerMagic--I hope it's OK that I'm re-posting this) but I'm just not sure if white subway tile might be too stark in our kitchen. Our cabs are white rather than off-white, there's no window above the sink and there won't be much painted wall showing. If we went with this color scheme we'd probably do something like BM Bennington Gray on the walls. Not certain if we'd use the contrasting grout or go with something whiter. I like how the beige-y backsplash in this 2nd photo adds a little more color to the room. Was thinking a subway tile in this shade might still work nicely with red accents (with paint in a similar beige shade): A third option would be to do a grayish paint (BM Gray Owl?) and go with a subway tile in carrara marble something like the one below (sorry--I'm not sure whose pic this is). The problem is I'm not sure that would coordinate well with the red in our dining room. It's also a cooler color scheme than I'd originally planned. Any thoughts? Our floors are hardwood, by the way--similar to the color in pic #2 or just a touch lighter. Thanks again for all the input!...See MoreBacksplash help? Comments (14)is that white around the window wood trim? or is it the window? if trim, I would remove it and tile up underneath the cabinets. I can't really tell from the pic what I'm looking at. the cabinets should not be sitting on that white trim part, or whatever that is. as for the tile...it's Tilebar.com. order some samples https://tilebar.com/roman-collection-wedgewood-herringbone-marble-and-glass-tile.html it also comes in a Tuscon Tan color. creamier tones. https://tilebar.com/florentine-asian-statuary-marble-tile-with-athens-gray-line.html I think the Calacatta marble would be a nice choice. https://tilebar.com/talon-calacatta-and-thassos-marble-tile.html this one is mixed w/the white marble Take a look around here at all of their subway tiles. maybe find something different that you like? https://tilebar.com/collection/subway-tiles.html Maybe look at the Cadenza Line of subways. this is Thunder and Baja Dunes. Both of them would look nice w/the cabinet color and play well w/flooring. https://tilebar.com/collection/subway-tiles/ceramic-porcelain-subway-tiles.html The glass subway tile in my previous comment,, I posted the name of the company and the tile color. you could google it....See MoreWhat backsplash with Colonial White granite counters & white cabinets?
Comments (19)After more thought, the 4x12 is going to look weird. It will only be 4 tiles high behind the main counter. And the long stretch under the bar is only 5.5 inches tall so it will have one tile and a sliver of a tile under the bar. I really wish I could find something that is 2.5x6, 3x8, 3x10 in a color similar to the MSI Dove Gray. The MSI Dove Gray has a silvery tone to it that goes best with the Colonial White granite counters. I found a 2x10 tile that is gray (SOCI Crafted Brick Gray which is apparently new). I like the size, the crackle finish, and the uneven handcrafted look to it but the gray is more of a putty color. It doesn't have the silvery color that the Dove Gray has. The SOCI Crafted Brick Gray is apparently new so I can't find any pictures or displays at showrooms of it up on a wall to see how it looks installed. But, the Colonial White granite has some silver shimmer scattered throughout it that I think goes better with the Dove Gray. So, does anyone know of a silvery gray tile in a 2x6-10 or 2.5x6-10 or 3x8-10?? Something other than the 3x6 size that is everywhere. A little bit shorter and wider than the standard 3x6. Thank you very much for any advice or suggestions! Dove Gray on left in 3x6. Soci Crafted Brick in 2x10 on right. Dove Gray 4x12 on left. Soci Crafted Brick Gray 2x10 on right....See Morechispa
