First fall garden - what to pull? what to keep growing?

I've had my first successful fall garden this year. I have kale, swiss chard, a few cabbage plants, arugula and lettuce, but need to clear some space to plant garlic. I'm in zone 5 and daytime temperatures will be in the 40s and nighttime temperatures in the 30s over the next couple of weeks and then colder than that. I have row cover, greenhouse plastic, and/or a cold frame I could put on some of the plants. I know they may stop growing with the colder temperatures and shorter days, but would any of these be worth leaving in the ground for a harvest in a month or so?

The cabbages have been growing from transplants for about 90 days, so I think they probably aren't going to head up. I think they're a purple napa cabbage, but they might be a round cabbage (labels got a bit mixed up).

You might have gotten bigger more usable plants if you had spaced them out. Quality over quantity. Winter is coming.

The cabbage and kale will probably keep growing until you get a really cold night. Might as well let them keep growing. Some kale can survive down to about zero F.

Eat some arugula now, you have so much, could leave some it may last for awhile yet, but probably will not get much bigger.

Chard will survive for awhile until some really cold nights.

The lettuce might as well be eaten now. Will grow slower and slower, and be ruined by a hard freeze.

Of course we can’t see the whole area, but it looks to me as if you have enough space to plant some garlic without getting rid of anything. And, as Robert said, start using what you have growing there rather than waste it by pulling it out. You could use row cover to protect the crops for longer into the winter.

Hi Nathalia. I live in SA, too, so I'm going to give you very specific suggestions. First of all, it was only last year when we had a lot of 100+ degree days. Normally it would take years to accumulate as many really hot days as we had last summer. This is not to say you can ignore heat. From April through November we will have plenty of heat. Start by listening to the radio. Turn on AM 550 (KTSA) radio from 6:30 - 9:00 am every Saturday and again on Sunday morning from 9:00 - 11:00. Bob Webster hosts the best organic gardening show there is anywhere on radio or TV. I don't agree 100% with him but he's light years ahead of other radio personalities when it comes to gardening. He is 100% organic, so his only advice on garden chemicals is to stay completely away from them. You can visit with Bob Webster or his people at his nursery, Shades of Green, on Sunset Road between I-281 and Broadway (north of the Quarry Market). Yes he has an interest in selling you plants, but nobody in town knows more about plants, fruits, and organic gardening in Central Texas. The plants he sells are adapted to the area...unlike what you'll find at the red, orange and blue box stores. Webster sells ideas and leaves the plant selections up to you. He also puts on free seminars at his nursery on Saturday mornings. Call, listen, or visit to get the schedule. Be sure to attend the one on Tomatoes and peppers. You might have to camp out overnight to get a seat. He IS that popular. If you live on the southeast side of town, visit Fannick's Nursery on Holmgren Rd. If you live on the west side, visit Fertile Garden Supply on Loop 1604 south of Bandera Hwy. Neither of these people will steer you wrong. If you live in the north east, or even if you don't, visit Garden-Ville, one mile off of Nacogdoches Road outside Loop 1604 at Cibolo Creek. They only sell soil amendments, but Malcolm Beck lives adjacent to the offices out there. You can visit Malcolm's gardens on a casual stroll around the place. Look to see what he's done with his raised gardens and his row crops. He's been 100% organic since the 1960s. If you're lucky you can visit with Malcolm or his wife, Delphine, while you're there. They're retired from owning Garden-Ville but are still active in the operation. If you see either one of them, show an interest in greenhouse growing. They might take you to the most awesome greenhouse I've ever seen (and I've seen a bunch). Of all the things you mentioned wanting to grow, blueberries are going to be the biggest headache. They like acidic soil with a pH down around 5. Our soil is limestone with a pH up around 8.0. Webster can help you with an adapted plant variety and some soil that will get you going, but don't expect buckets of berries like you'd find in Labrador. People say keepIng it simple this year, and I laugh. Keeping it simple is when you garden outside of AZ. Anything here takes a tender hand and a watchful eye. I LOVE hearing about all of these varieties!! This is awesome! I have jalapeÃ¯Â¿Â½os and serranos, lots of swiss chard, romaine, and butter lettuce. I started up another zucchini, and an acorn squash, along with several varieties of cucumber. Oh, and bell peppers of course, from spring plants - those are finally coming into their own, along with about half dozen eggplants. LOTS of eggplants!! Interestingly, my concord grape is fruiting this fall. It already produced this spring, and I didn't realize that it would re-fruit for me now...!

Transplants will be available at the store when it's time to plant, but not before. I wouldn't direct seed the cauliflower, broccoli, and cabbage - because by the time the daily temps fall to the range for the seeds to germinate, you most likely won't have enough time left in the growing season for them to reach maturity. Either way, get ready for the fight of your life with insects - especially the imported cabbage worm, cabbage looper, and slugs. EG

Bok choy and snow peas and bok choy. Did I mention bok choy? All are from seed sown through August, here at 2,000 feet near the 49th parallel. There was also some radish seed that went in and cilantro for the final rush of tomatoes and salsa. We have already harvested quite a lot of the first sowing of bok choy. We have also had morning temperatures in the low 40's Fahrenheit. I've picked snow peas covered with frost in October before. Steve

Thanks, everyone! "Pull" definitely meant "pull and eat" - I won't let anything go to waste, just wondering what might continue to grow over the next couple of months and how much/what kind of protection would be most beneficial.

There is plenty of room, but I have about 200 cloves of garlic to plant (this will be my third year of planting garlic) and I'd like to rearrange the rows from 4 narrow rows with wide paths to 3 wider rows (30 inches) with a bit narrower paths, to maximize growing space. So I'm working out how I can redo the rows, have enough space for garlic now, and still have a row left for a summer crop next summer...

All of your advice fits what I thought - I'll leave the kale and chard in and harvest the arugula (for pesto) and the remaining lettuce. If the row configuration and garlic planting allows it, I'll leave the cabbage plants, just to see what happens. If no heads ever form, I'll still eat the cabbage leaves!

I've been gardening over the summer for about five years, so that experience is helping with the fall garden. But for my first attempt at a fall garden last year, I just tried direct seeding everything after I harvested the garlic. Since that resulted in about two tiny swiss chard leaves, this year I started seedlings and transplanted them :)
