Yes the seasons do overlap but my summer vegetables get pretty tired during the summer heat. I don't try to carry over tomatoes unless they are cherries. I just replant in July. I do keep the peppers and eggplants but the squash are replanted. Cucumbers can be hit by cucumber beetles and I replant them too. It also helps not to plant the whole garden so I keep a few areas open. You can also plant lettuce and radishes and beans under the larger plants. This works really well in wide rows but might not do so well in square foot gardening. That's one of the reasons I still do row cropping. Now if you've planted potatoes and corn, they should have been harvested and open up room. Same with the onions. I think the real problem is that most people in Texas only plant a few different types of vegetables that are perennial in their native tropical setting. Since we rarely have a real spring and fall, we don't "feel" the proper time to plant veggies that like cooler weather. That's my 2 cents worth and I had the same problem but after missing fall veggies for a few years, I forced myself to cull and replant and have been satisfied ever since. Good luck

Hard to say if the harvest will be significant .. ^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^ As I mentioned in my first comments, potatoes need AVERAGE 100 days(from sprout to harvest) I would say anywhere from 85 days to 110 days , depending on the variety, So say if you planted in mid September, It would be 60 days at mid November: NOT ENOUGH. I think SD area weather is good for two crops : spring and fall. For the fall you could plant them early August. For Spring , plant them in February.

I build things, and I am planting groundcovers, trees and shrubs so they don't totally fry trying to establish in summer. I am in San Jose, zone 15-also without rain but all winter long. I have been nursing my frost-hit citrus tree babies, and I am still harvesting raspberries from these crazy Italian bred ever-bearers! I built lovely wood cages to support these berries, five foot long rectangular boxes with cross members to support the canes, and stuck some finials on top of the uprights. Also filled out the under planting of alpine strawberries. I am making a grape arbor next weekend to span my driveway. I am installing solar powered light strings to give nighttime enjoyment- this garden is surrounding the kitchen door entry yard where all friends and neighbors sneak in to help us eat dinner, so I may as well make it pretty :) I am planting apple trees in a cordon along the driveway- opposite the berries- and considering chamomile and creeping thyme to carpet the ground- it's all wood chips from previous owner and I have to go slow as I want to install some stone pavers but only can afford two at a time . I am trying to make the garden areas look established and formal, my house turns 100 this year and is in a very visible urban neighborhood on a busy street so I can't have a tangle of dead tomatoes or blue tarp shade structure showing . My potager surrounds my driveway and side entrance and is very visible from the street. Hundreds of people walk by daily and I gotta show off! Anyhow, that's my winter, happy to read of others actions for more inspiration! Pea

Graywings, Bibb lettuce is the type I see here sold in those clamshells. As long as the roots exist and have been kept moist, they can be planted and will grow more leaves. I planted the remains of our local hothouse Bibb variety about 2 weeks ago and they are almost ready to pick. My daughter allowed red leaf lettuce (greenhouse purchased) to go to seed last year and this year she has several beautiful heads. here's my lettuce surrounded by pepper plants in the grow box. We can’t have a garden here because the deer, rabbits and other critters have a field day.
