Bathroom Window Treatment

I am working on re-doing our bathroom and need help with the window treatment. I am thinking about changing the valance to a layered look with grommet panels and sheers, but afraid it may be too much, crowd the vanity and should just stick with a valance. The window looks out to our front porch. Ideas?

Composite material, Plantation shutters is my recommendation.

How can anyone give useful advice without seeing the rest of the room, having any hint about your style or that of the house, or what you need in terms of privacy or other functionality??

If you have white wainscotting and oak trim and floors, I would hesitate to go with a taupe or stone color because in my mind oak is naturally more on the yellow side of things while taupe or stone would be more blueish. I know you said you have blue walls...but the way I imagine it doesn't look right. White or just barely off-white, in my opinion would look better, although without a picture I can't say for certain. And, for the record, taupe is my favorite neutral, so it's not because I don't like the color! I think roman shades are the way to go here. Would the smaller window look silly with roman shades (is it too small)? You could also think about cordless honeycomb shades, which would let in the most light.I don't like those window films - I think if people look in they can still see through them somewhat.

For maximizing privacy and still allowing light, I really like the "top down, bottom up" shades. Ours is from Hunter-Douglas, it's pleated, the "Duette" version, it allows soft diffuse light through when fully closed. We usually keep it in a partial "top down" mode, so the bottom of the window is covered but full natural light can come through the top. This photo shows "top down" on the left windows, "Top down bottom up" on the one second from the right, and "bottom up" on the right. Very versatile. No mold/mildew, ours has been in for 15 years.

Thanks for the reply on the paint, my husband is dragging his feet on putting in the baseboard and bead board. Good idea alternating summer and winner curtains, think I'll try that also. I just got my sewing machine out to make your london valance I believe it is called. I don't have fabric I really wanted but will make it for a summer valance and practice following your directions. I had made this type of valance a couple of years ago but yours maybe easier, I also bought trim and the glue and think I'm all set. I've never bought much on e-Bay but it is a good savings if you find what you want and I'll take a look. Thanks. Evelyn

I’m no expert on window treatments, but I think Roman blind or cafe curtain here. I had a similar dilemma with some inswing casements in a bathroom, and I resisted the idea of window film. Then one day, I gave it a shot, and wondered why I waited so long! It was a perfect solution (for me,) and the entire roll of film was under $10. Just a thought—you’d have very little to lose, though you want a steady hand when you apply it. Also: that is a beautiful tub! So elegant. And one more thing: may I ask what us that green thing out the window?? good luck!

Ditch the fuss of blinds and valancefor a plantation shutter. Get with a local Hunter Douglas dealer.

We have plantation shutters in a similar situation in our bathroom. But, our window is much higher than yours. See if there is a shutter design where you could completely close the bottom portion for privacy, but crack the top portion open for some natural light. We used Budget Blinds, but there are lots of other companies.

Plantation shutters would look great but they are also very expensive for that size window and we don't plan on staying here too much longer. My husband and I plan on selling the house within a couple of years so I have been looking for ways to do some updates. My style is more traditional with oil rubbed bronze fixtures and deep rich colors like browns, cremes and a touch of burgundy. I the colors I have a pretty solid decision on, just looking for ideas on the styles. Since the window is on the main floor and it on the front of the house, privacy is a must.

I think your idea is a bit much (and busy) for a bathroom area. I would do a Roman shade(s) for a clean, soft look.

We also have plantation shutters that I love, but I understand your reasoning since they are pricey. They'd likely appeal to many buyers, especially with a front-facing window.

I think the suggestion from Jinx sounds good.
