Austin roses for zone 10
Comments (7)I’m not sure what the question is here, but I’ve tried many many Austins in my zone 10 garden (regardless of the zone they recommend) and almost all of them did well desp the heat. However, disease was an issue and most didn’t make it after a few years. Those that do thrive in my garden are the ones that have good natural resistance to disease and good vigor. Spirit of freedom, Huntington rose, Pat Austin, Evelyn, Charlotte, Princess Anne, Geoff Hamilton, James Galway, heritage, Winchester cathedral, mary rose, Abe Darby , wollerton old hall, litchfield Angel and Charles Darwin have all done well for me. Teasing Georgia grows very well, but lacks blooms. Queen of Sweden is ok, but her blooms are tiny in the hot climate. Failures include Alnwick Castle, jubilee celebration, strawberry Hill, Jude the obscure, and Leander. I’ve tried these on multiple occasions without success....See MoreThe Poet's Wife - 2019

Comments (155)Ikaye, I am so sorry to read about all your rain and flood warnings. All this rain has serious national repercussions, too. There is a massive die off of crab, shrimp, oysters, and other yummy stuff that live in the salty waters of Louisiana and Mississippi lower swampy areas. The water is being diluted by fresh water pouring out of the Mississippi into the salty water where the seafood live. They die if there isn't a certain amount of salt in the water. Now, back to gardening--the gazebo is my good friend and gardening mentor's. She gardens several acres--by herself. We are both 73 and still do it all except the grass. Those photos were at her place June 5. My garden and yard are small, and I don't have room for a big gazebo. What I really want is a little cottage/garden retreat, sitting amongst the roses. That's not going to happen, sadly. I hope your rain finally stops. And no floods! Blondie, what a beautiful Carding Mills. I love the colors and bloom structure. Any more roses blooming for you? I'm glad you got those new Austin roses, but thought of my not lamented PAoK that I dug out a few years back. She was a monster garden thug, and when the summer heated up, started producing little bright coral blooms with a few petals. I've never seen anything like it. Comments (34)Suzanne I have three off your DA list, all were planted last year. I can’t help but call her Dezzi, I have two, and absolutely love her. She blooms her head off and is super healthy in my garden. Across the path from Dezzi is QoS. Mild myrrh fragrance, narrow, but taller than I was expecting. Very disease resistant for me. This year I’m moving her to the back, and putting Bliss at her feet. The Poet’s Wife. Love, love, LOVE her! She stayed in the 3gal pot I bought her in all season, and surpassed my expectations. Big exceptionally fragrant blooms that remind me of fruit cups I used to get in my lunch box as a kid. I ordered two of her so I’ll have three for my mailbox garden. She does get some lighter colored blooms, I’m not sure if that will change once she is in the ground, but also very disease resistant for me. I don’t spray. I almost got Savannah too this year, and I hope South Africa turns out good. This will be my first year with a few Kordes, I mostly have Austins atm....See More

3 years ago@oursteelers 8B PNW I don't grow Poet's Wife, but I really like clean yellows, especially with less orange if they're going to be "yellow". I got The Pilgrim this year and it was really healthy, vigorous rose here for me with the prettiest of all the yellows I tried this year:
Julia Child - Too orange yellow for me...pretty but nothing unique color wise
Imogen - Yellow centered white Austin. Yellow is warmer side like Julia Child and flowers shatter
Graham Thomas - Again, pretty but too standard of a yellow for me
The Pilgrim has the cleanest, cool toned lemon yellow and the best scent of all my yellows. I'm awful at describing scents, but it reminds me of my Jubilee Celebration (favorite). Fresh, clean, lemon citrus scent.
On top of all these things I liked about it, the flowers were some of the prettiest of any of my roses. Really fluffy and could handle heat/sun well. Has a really nice subtle gradient to it which creates a beautiful glow effect. Here's are two pictures, first in warmer afternoon light, second in cooler morning light. Maybe you'll like her-

B I have The Pilgrim and like it. I can’t say I love it. Vigor and repeat are slow so far. He is in quite a bit of shade and has terrible soil. There is nothing I can do about the sun and tree roots but I’m going to give him a ton of compost and hope his third year is his leap year.

Your Pilgrim is beautiful!
This is the darkest colour i get on The Poet's Wife. This is a photo on cool cloudy weather. It is a bit lighter on sunny warm days but doesn't fade too much for me. But we don't as much strong sun anyway.
I like yellow flowers. I find them cheerful.
