Creekside Manor Tea- What Is It Really?
Comments (23)Hi Ann- My source was an HMF reference from an article written by Rev. Seidel for "Heritage Roses" in which he discusses going out to Creekside in 1973; I don't have the whole article, but part of it is quoted in the most recent reference for "Mrs Keays' Pink Noisette". Rescuing roses from poison ivy thickets is an act of real devotion. Perhaps Mr. Scaniello is the source for "Creekside Manor"? Thanks, Virginia...See MoreI need a reference book...any suggestions?
Comments (12)Jen, some of the best books are available used, at VERY reasonable prices. Search ABEbooks . . . I HIGHLY recommend Mrs. Keays book. It's one of the books I keep closest to my hand. "OLD ROSES." Everyone ought to have a copy of "A BOOK ABOUT ROSES" by Dean Hole. (You can find this VERY inexpensively, because it ran to so many editions.) For the sheer romance of the thing, look for "IN SEARCH OF LOST ROSES" by Thomas Christopher. (Just don't take everything he writes as gospel.) For warm-climate gardeners, the new book on Tea Roses is an essential. It's "TEA ROSES: Old Roses For Warm Gardens." AND "NOISETTE ROSES: 19TH CENTURY CHARLESTON'S GIFT TO THE WORLD" See if you can find a copy of "LANDSCAPING WITH ANTIQUE ROSES," Druitt & Shoup. That was my Bible, starting out. Of course, there are many more. That's just a start. I have Austins and Beales big books, but they are British-Centric. They don't apply well to Southern CA, so they are banished these days to the less-accessible bookshelves. Jeri...See MoreInsurer seeks to avoid claims in blaze
Comments (8)Dad of Stamford Fire Victims Plans to Sue by Anthony Buzzeo STAMFORD, Conn. Matthew Badger has filed a notice of intent to sue the city of Stamford for negligence in connection with the Christmas morning fire that took the lives of his daughters Sarah, Grace and Lilly. The notice was delivered to the Town Clerks office Friday, May 4, by Badgers lawyer. The Shippan Avenue home destroyed by fire was owned by Badgers estranged wife, Madonna, who was one of the two survivors of the blaze. The notice names the city's director of operations Ernie Orgera, City Engineer Louis Casolo, Assessor Francis Kirwin and Building Official Robert DeMarco for their or their offices part in allowing the girls to be in the home at the time of the fire. "[Badger] suffered damages as a consequence of the aforementioned parties negiligence, carelessness, and actions, including but not limited to the wrongful death of the children on December 25, 2011," the notice said. The notice points to several actions by the city that might have led to the deaths, including the wrongful issuance of permits to Michael Borcina and/or Tiberias Construction Inc., and to Michael Foley and/or Foleys Fine Carpentry Inc. It also alleges that city officials either did not inspect the construction enough or did so carelessly, failure to follow up on inspections despite the home's being in unsafe condition for the children, and for allowing the children to live in the house without working smoke detectors and a fire alarm system. The notice described the demolition of the home the day after the fire as "intentional spoliation of evidence." By Tuesday afternoon, Town Clerk Donna Loglisci said she had not yet received the actual suit. Messages have been left for both Joseph Capalbo II, director of Legal Affairs for Stamford, and Richard Emery, Badgers attorney....See MoreA Catalog A Day Keeps The Winter Gloom Away
Comments (81)Most of the major seed companies probably get their seed supplies from pretty much the same major wholesalers, so I shop based more on price point than anything else since the seed often is from the exact same wholesaler. I do try to give the majority of my business to smaller firms (small as compared to the big guys like Burpee) that use at least some local/regional seed growers based here in the USA. I like to encourage the little guys to keep on growing. I used to buy more from SSE, but use SESE now a lot more, and that's been a trend for quite a few years now. Both supply quality seeds, but I've found that SESE generally ships more quickly, and they feature varieties tested/grown in the southeastern USA, which has conditions similar to ours here in the southern plains. I don't remember what I purchased from Eden Brothers in the past, but I was happy with it....whatever it was. Victory Seeds is a particular favorite of mine because they work hard to keep their heirloom tomato seeds true to type and I never get an 'off type' that bares little resemble to what it is supposed to be. They also give the true history of each heirloom variety, as it is known, with no embellishment, which is getting rare nowadays. I'm really picky about tomato varieties and if a company sends me tomato seed that is not true to type, I'm not likely to buy from them again. After doing that for a few years now, I am buying tomato seeds from increasingly fewer places. Swallowtail Garden Seeds also ships very quickly. You normally get your seeds within just a few days of ordering them....See Morebelmont8
