Router not Recognizing Ethernet Cable

I’m trying to connect a new Netgear Nighthawk ac2600 to an older Windows 10 desktop pc, not wifi capable. The router does not recognize (light up) any of the 4 ports that I plug the ethernet cable into. The router does light up when I plug in the cable for my VOIP system. I’m unable to set up the pc if the router does not recognize the pc. Any suggestions?

If each of the Nighthawk's 4 Lan sockets will enable your VOIP system, and if the same cord doesn't activate a connection for the PC, I would suspect the PC to be the problem. Two possible solutions, the second only if the first doesn't work

#1, go to Settings, Network and Internet, Ethernet, Change Adapter Options, Right Click on the Ethernet adapter icon and make sure it's enabled. If it IS enabled, your option after right clicking will be to Disable. If it's enabled and it doesn't connect, move on to #2.

#2 - if it is enabled but won't automatically make the connection, you should consider buying a USB Wifi adaptor. Don't go for the cheapest ones but for $20-$30, you'll have a little device that mostly installs itself and will work well.

I bought this one when I decided to press into service in a distant location an older PC I'd stopped using. It doesn't have a built in Wifi capability. With this little device that I have plugged in at the back so it's really not visible, it connects at the same max speed that much newer devices can connect at, on both wifi bands.

Thanks Elmer. That’s now the plan.

My ISP Tech was unable to diagnose what the exact issue was. I neglected to mention that my pc was able to get Internet access when the ethernet cable was directly plugged into the modem. He left shaking his head saying he’d be back tomorrow with a dongle.

I would think that any name brand wireless router will work fine. I have a DSL modem supplied by the phone company, and a 4-port Belkin Pre-N wireless router I bought separately a couple of years ago. The incoming signal goes to the modem, and then an Ethernet cable goes to the router. Hard wired devices plug into the ports in the back of the modem via Ethernet cable. My router can handle 4 hard-wired devices, and 32 wireless devices. I have 4 PCs hooked up to it (1 wired, 3 wireless), a Roku box (wireless), and a printer (wireless). The only thing to keep in mind about cable is that speeds can vary depending on how many people in the neighborhood are online at any given time. DSL is a constant speed, and since mine is 3 Mbps, that's enough for me. Have you checked to see whether your DSL supplier can provide a higher speed? Last year, my speed was 1.5 Mbps and I asked if they had anything higher in my area. They said they had 3.0 available for the same price. When I asked why they hadn't just bumped up my speed, they said they were only allowed to change my account if I called to request and authorize it first! I said: Who wouldn't want twice the speed for the same price? They said they just wanted to be sure this was something I wanted! At any rate, 10 seconds later I had twice the speed. Lastly, since you're mixing PCs and Macs on your system, I don't know if that would cause any problems. I have have friends with Macs who visit and they can get on my system (when I give them my security code) with no problem. However, if you are switching providers, you should ask first if there could be any problems.

I warned you I was computer rookie. Here is what I know: 1. I have two computers. One that is set up for wireless( laptop) and one that is an older computer no wireless and is hooked up to the router. 2. Both of them work connecting to the internet 3. My older one has issues and is very slow so I mostly use my laptop. Professor said something about his blackboard and wireless has problems time to time 4. I have the cable from the wall from the cable company that is hooked to their modem and then through an ethernet the older computer has a cable from router to it. 5. I wanted to do the same thing with my laptop. I tried disconnecting the olderr computer to the router and plugging the laptop in it's place but it still appears it is using wireless( because when I disenabled wireless) it wouldn't hook to internet I don't know how to check wireless settings to accept all like somebody recommended thanks

Kudzu is exactly right, there are a lot of rip-offs going on by producers of cables and wiring of all kinds. Cables.com is also a good place to buy fairly priced products. Monster Cable is one of the the worst perpetrators but there are many others. They tout meaningless and valueless features as an excuse for premium prices. OP, you may only spend a few weeks there, but it strikes me that bringing along a wireless router to use is a lot less fuss and less elaborate than whatever you went through to have a satellite internet connection. I'd personally rather not deal with a cable through the living quarters since the alternative is so simple and inexpensive, but suit yourself.

Most routers come with a perfectly fine ethernet cable. If you need other ethernet cables to run to individual computers, don't get suckered into buying an expensive one at your local store. A couple of bucks is adequate. Here is one I just found on Amazon that is 25-feet long, has gold-plated contacts, gets great reviews, costs 98 cents, and ships for free! That almost suggests a problem with the router sockets or circuitry but if the VOIP device connnects okay with each one, then it's a puzzle. Do you have other devices you need to plug into the router?

Don't hesitate to go with a decent wifi adapter, you'd never know the difference unless your usage pattern requires the higher speed ethernet link. Unless you're a power user or have a fiberoptic connection, you're unlikely to need or notice the outer ranges of possible performance. For most people, the current performance ability of wifi exceeds in normal usage their max internet throughput anyway.

We’re not power users so we should be fine with this work around. I’m placing the VOIP device first off the modem and then the router. Wifi speeds are fine for our uses.

If the VOIP device doesn't work properly from all 4 sockets on the router, the problem may be the router. If you can, return it and get another one.

Faulty router was our original diagnosis so I exchanged it for another. Same thing.

Have you tried using the same cable which works for the VOIP system? If not, try that.
