Architects, Landscape designers - would appreciate your advice

We hired a Driveway - Excavating Contractor to replace our very long driveway. They are starting in 3 days. The driveway is very long and runs in front of house. We had a plan and now we are having second thoughts. The plan was to have asphalt, then a few rows of Belgian Block, then pea gravel in front of the entry and a few more rows of Belgian block and then asphalt. we are now questioning whether we should use gravel in front. Maybe we should use pavers or just asphalt? I posted earlier looking for advice on hiring a professional to help with the design and we got some suggestions on but they all are designers and installers and won't take just design job. We have a contractor (already paid 25%) and they are starting the job in a few days --we need help with design ideas. Celery posted a nice picture with Belgain Block and Asphalt, looking for more design ideas or suggestions. It is a really big job $$$ and now we are worried that the gravel part of design is not going to work. We are in the Northeast - cold snowy climate. The driveway is over 1/4 mile long- would appreciate your thoughts, the driveway in front of the house is unsightly --we really want to add curb appeal and create an tasteful country entrance that can withstand cold and snow plows! Appreciate your ideas.
