SIT Proflame 2 IFC doesn't work without battery pack

Hi there! I bought my house back in March and in my living room the previous owners installed a gas fireplace. From what I can tell the fireplace is a Brigantia 35-DVRS31N. The problem I'm having is that the fireplace appears to work perfect fine with a fresh set of (4) AA batteries in the backup battery pack. But when these batteries die, the system no longer works. According to what I can find on the internet, it appears this battery pack is meant to be a backup, and thus it should work without the batteries, correct?

The IPI is a SIT Proflame 2 (https://www.kozyheat.com/wp-content/uploads/2016/01/SIT_ProFlame_II_Troubleshooting_Guide.pdf)

From what I can tell according this guide I found online (the IFC looks exactly like mine) it seems to be wired correctly.

Just to clarify -- I interact with the fireplace using the remote (shown in the PDF I linked).
