Packing (light) for Europe
Comments (7)My DD just spent her spring semester abroad in Italy. She lived in Florence, but having no classes on Fridays left her free to travel someplace practically every weekend. She traveled to Rome, Pisa, Chianti, etc. Also, while there, she had bus2alps.com which provides very inexpensive travel options in Europe - Greece, Spain, etc. She only stayed in hostels, and they were much nicer than she was expecting. No where near as nice as being in a 4 star hotel, but for the cost, a good way to travel through Europe. As far as packing light, pick one basic dark color as a base (I do black). I take leggings, shorts, skirt and a dress. Since you have access to a W/D you only need 1 of each. I then add one black t-shirt and 3 colored t-shirts or blouses. I throw in a couple of matching fashion scarves, as well as a v neck pullover cashmere sweater. I don't know if you like Chico's clothing, but I know they have a travelers line for that specific purpose. I am not a Chico's person, their clothing doesn't fit me well, but I have quite a few friends who rely heavily on the Chico traveler line for ease in packing less. I like to do my own mix and match with just basics and use accessories to kick it up if required depending on where we are going. We cruised the high arctic for 3 wks and I managed with 1 suitcase. I needed boots, coats, etc. and still managed on 1 suitcase which included my pillow (crazy but I have to sleep on my own pillow, LOL). When I pack for up to a week, I use my good ole standby Patagonia backpack. Perfect for traveling. It definitely makes you take only what you absolutely need. Mine has few zipper compartments, etc. BEST TIP: Take the basics out of your closet and try everything on with options at home. Take only those things you know will look good together, as well as being versatile. Then stick with them. The options will be fresh in your mind. I roll my clothes, and use tissue paper for anything that might wrinkle. Don't usually travel with that type of stuff, but if I need to wear a dress, I just roll it in tissue and into the backpack it goes. I love the Patagonia women's clothing and it travels well. Don't forget to pack an electrical converter set if you're planning to use a hair dryer or something of that sort. I learned to pack leanly from my SIL who never travels with anything more than a backpack. You would never know it if you met her on the street. She is fashionable and well dressed, doesn't look like a wrinkled up homeless woman. Pickpockets are a problem even here in the US. Check out some of the traveler catalogs and buy one of the document/money holders which you wear around your neck, putting it under your clothing. Just have to layer with a t-shirt or tank with a short/long sleeve blouse on top. I am a layer type person since many times we start out very early in the morning when its still cold and I peel things off as the day wears on. Stow them in my back pack and then put them back on as it gets cooler in the evenings. Some days we don't ever get back to the hotel at all to change. Your trip sounds like lots of fun! Wish I were going. Have a great time!...See MorePacking light for a long trip ???
Comments (18)We just got back from 10 days in France. I carry a backpack, totally packed that weighs between 15-18 lbs. I think mine actually weighs less than my DH's pack! LOL My backpack isn't standard. It is GoLite. It weighs practically nothing. I use the feather weight stuff sacks from REI to sort my belongings. I roll my clothes. I take clothes that are a blend of cotton with a touch of spandex for stretch and wrinkle-resistance. They also dry faster. Most of my clothes are from Chico's, Soma and REI. I don't purchase the "travel clothes", just the ones with the right fabric blend. I get the Vanity Fair microfiber undies and they dry quickly, roll up into a tiny size, so you can take a sufficient supply. I do like the Soma traveler's bras without the underwire. Roll up small and wash/dry quickly. Here's what I took to France for temps in the mid 60s & 70s and I could have carried less. I washed out my jeans a couple of times and hung them on the drying rack outside at the apartment (dried in one day while we were out and about). All of the black items were matching coodinates. 2 pairs of Chico platinum jeans (light and dark indigo) 2 pairs of black slacks 1 pair of Gramicci quick-dry pants (we went hiking) 1 black skirt PJs 1 pair of grey yoga pants for hanging out at the apartment 1 long sleeve blue top 1 short sleeve hiking T 1 3/4 sleeve turquoise top 1 3/4 sleeve lime green top 1 long sleeve black top 1 short sleeve black T 1 sleeveless black tunic with 2/4 sleeve tie front jacket 1 3/4 sleeve floral top 1 b&w lightweight checked jacket 1 multicolor knit jacket (went with all tops except the floral) 1 Royal Robbins lightweight black rain jacket 1 pair of tan NB Country Walkers for hiking (wore those on the plane as they weighed the most) 1 pair of black Keen strap mules 1 pair of TravelSox (for the plane) 3 pairs of Coolmax casual socks 2 pairs of Coolmax tan hiking socks 5 sets of lingerie 1 pack towel (for hiking/beach) 1 Sudoku book 1 novel Bose headphones (DH had the iPod for music with a shared connector) 2 books on France 2 roadmaps Toiletries: toothbrush Listerine strips (bought mouthwash in France) travel toothpaste travel size floss Neutrogena tinted moisturizer with SPF 20 (in lieu of foundation and moisturizer) Sample size of Lancome mascara from dept store Lipstick Travel size bottles filled with shampoo and condition Travel size bottle filled with facial cleanser bought lotion in France I also carried a small Eagle Creek black purse, my Canon Elph camera with charger and extra memory cards. Everything I just mentioned is in this photo! We were on our way from our hotel in Nice to the train station to pick up our rental car. I walked about 2 miles with no problems. Easy to get through airports and customs...no checked bags to wait on; no lost luggage. Totally portable. I'm 54, not some young thing! LOL...See MoreArm & Hammer Ultra Power Packs 4 in 1 Detergent
Comments (36)Sparky, did you read one of my other posts where I said I have a tabelspoon and a shot glass ready for measuring? Did you think I was measuring detergent with a shot glass? Haha...just kidding ..but I probably will become flustered. I did use the A&H paks in my roper and with the hard agitation not a bubble. Before I wash a load I'm running the sheets thru with no detergent I want to see how much detergent residue I've been sleeping with..and you know I'm gonna equate it with dirty sheets. Lol. I don't think there will be much residue in the sheets I'm very picky about the bedding, but I'm prepared to be shocked....See MoreCleaning/packing for kitchen remodel
Comments (35)I love the ‘brown wood furniture’ that came to me through family members no longer living, those pieces have already made it to 40+ years and all I have to do is keep it clean so it survives unpainted and as originally assembled by Ethan Allen (why anyone would paint something wood and of quality I will never understand but people do it and often these painted pieces end up at flea markets after whoever had it got past their ‘boho shabby chic’ phase). I did give my aunt all the China in the pattern she and my mom chose when they got married (‘68 for Mom and ‘69 for my aunt) before the mister and I moved cross country August 2017. I have my own blue willow pattern set that can be washed in the dishwasher, and if I need more than 12 place settings then the kids can all just get paper plates. ;) I have a teapot, sugar and creamer in the pattern that are more display given that I don’t trust most adults with the tiny delicate tea cups and their matching tiny saucers - but I can still order a full place setting including those from bed bath and beyond at the store then have it ship to my house. My mom wanted to buy me a few more just in case of breakage but I really think I can get by with the 12 I have. Closets...oh don’t get me started on how much room I take up in the master walk in. It’s absurdly huge anyway but I have a lot of things in there and the mister has hanging room allocated so it’s all in the closet except his socks and underwear that are in the two dresser drawers of his very own instead of stuffed into a bin someplace in the house like it was before our move! And he has a big fancy tv! ...Right now is when I want to buy stuff like clothes for warmer weather but most of all I want to buy makeup to replace things that are close to needing to be thrown out. I’m hoping to manage restraint but I know I’m really just hoping to not buy ALL THE THINGS....See Moremagz88
