Am I able to receive houzz/gardenweb messages?

Could someone please do me the favor of trying to send me a message through gardenweb / houzz?

I'm trying to find out whether I am able to receive a message. I always thought I had to change something in settings to do that, but cannot find any such settings option.

just sent one...you have it enabled.The control is under "advanced settings" way down near the bottom of the list...who can message me.

My first reaction is that it's a good fit. There's a lot of cross traffic among some GW members and Houzz. Additionally, social streams are proven ways of keeping people involved with a site after a particular interest has been filled. I'm only guessing, but I'd think Houzz would want the forums, and want to keep them intact for that reason. It's not whether they have cooking, it's whether bringing in the CF to talk about cooking is of complementary interest to the people who frequent Houzz. There's the whole urban foraging movement, and Williams-Sonoma selling Yuppie chicken coops. I'm sure the Harvest Forum will find traction with the backyard-to-table crowd. They'd be best served by leaving clunky old Gardenweb alone. I've said this before, but the format where most recent reply, rather than most recent thread start or most popular is on top, and old threads fall off the bottom, is most conducive to lively and always fresh daily discussions. There's nothing duller than a forum where the members expect a newbie to wade through 3000 pages of past content to "get up to speed" on that which has been discussed before. Each discussion is a little different, and (nearly) each new person each thread attracts has something interesting to add. This past year there must have been half a dozen discussions of how to make spaghetti sauce! How great is that! It's also great that we're mostly self policing, and members feel free to throw in personal news, minor tangents, etc., without having the topic police editing them. Another great thing is all the white space. Jasdip is spot on about the avatars, animated signatures, etc., that choke most message boards nowadays. The good sized and scalable fonts make it easier to read GW as well. Summary: GW is great as is. :) My big question is was GW spun off or was Houzz acquired by NBC?

Brad: Thank you for the info. I got PlantStep back up and working last week. AdwCleaner moved it to the C drive and labeled all the files with a .vir extension. I had to use a program that will delete the .vir from the PlantStep files in bulk, reinstall PlantStep and then overlay the cleaned files back into PlantStep to get all my data and pictures back into the software. I would caution anyone on using AdwCleaner. I have a program within Windows that does a check of Services running on startup which will give me a list of programs that I might want to not have run on startup. I even disabled the AdBlockerPlus, cleared out the cache, temp files and still the issue with Houzz continues. The message is definitely being generated from Houzz. I upload photos to other sites without issue. Just Houzz has something that changed. I already got notification from Windows that my version of Windows and Apps will not be a problem with the new update. I'm still waiting for the message that I can install which probably won't happen for a few days as they roll it out.

jayapple21 9 hours ago I posted the following earlier today and several folks suggested that I post it here. ******** This Houzz/gardenweb thing has been so frustrating for me. I usually follow Houzz on a desktop computer (iMac) but sometimes I use my iPad. Over time I have bookmarked a number of Houzz 'dilemmas' to follow but the ones at the top of my daily list are lia's, rred's and zaz's. All three of these are pretty long-standing dilemmas with thousands of comments over the years. Recently there seems to be a correlation between the sites with 1000s of comments and the amount of time it takes for the site to open. Dilemmas that have perhaps 50-60 comments open immediately for me but with the three that I mentioned earlier it can take a long time and often I have to try and try again to get them to open. Sometimes there is a long pause before a site opens. This is on my desktop and it only began about 2-3 weeks ago when instead of 'houzz.com' showing up as the home site it began to read 'gardenweb.com'. I understand the two sites are linked, and apparently 'gardenweb' is much older and has been around for much longer, but my difficulty in getting dilemmas to open only began when the 'gardenweb' address began showing up. It is the most frustrating thing and I have a hunch the webmaster folks at Houzz.com are NOT aware of this change that has occurred. I know diddly-squat about computers but since 'gardenweb' is an old site, and the problem I have involves getting threads with huge amounts of comments to open, I wonder if the old 'gardenweb' site just can't handle the storage volume that's been generated over the years even though it's now linked with 'houzz.com'.

Funny you should mention this. I can only receive messages via my email and not through the Houzz portal. If someone sends me a message here, it does not show up here, but it does show up in my gmail inbox.

Well, I'm glad my messages don't go to the email I registered here with, because that has been "dead" for probably 15 years. It was a case of use it or lose it. I lost it.

Mine show up here but I also receive an email. Without the email I never check to see if I have any. I am aware that they are now showing up in notifications but I just clear them periodically.

In the control panel, there is also a box you can check to receive a notice from Houzz that you have a personal message. That is separate from the message itself. Go to the place I described for Matthias and look at the checkboxes. That might be why you aren't getting Houzz notifications of new messages.

When I open the "messages" on Houzz, it takes me to the "new inbox" but there is nothing there, except messages from last year, even though I have received emails with new messages this month. The new inbox for messages does not work for me here, but at least I can see them in my email.

Lars, go to Advanced settings and look for this. If you change the
"notify me if someone messages me" you should get houzz notices. Don't look in Messages but here:

Right now I have "someone messages me" as "every time" instead of never. Should I change it from "every time" to "Never"?

ETA: I just went to my inbox here and looked in my "Old Inbox" and found my most recent messages. The "New Inbox" only has messages from July 2019!

It's curious, that's for sure. I would think your settings are correct, just a houzz glitch?
