Thanks so much for the feedback and help everyone. I am going to try 50% white dove, 50% atrium white and I'll report back on the color. Hopefully it will be helpful to others. This is for the upstairs bedroom ceilings. I may get more adventurous with the ceilings downstairs. I understand the trend, Pattycakes. I don't want to be out of date; I know white ceilings are somewhat boring and unimaginative, but I think they will never go completely out of style, sort of like white kitchen cabinets. There are some rooms that just need the light. I do appreciate knowing that the trend is towards color on the ceilings and will definitely consider that in the other parts of the house.

I hate to complicate your decision, but I am wondering about the colors in the rest of the house. Will the other rooms also be Swiss Coffee walls, ceiling, trim? I had a white on white home and used the same color on walls, trim and ceiling. Walls were eggshell, trim was satin, ceilings were flat. I made the mistake of using the eggshell on ceilings many many years ago and it was on a ceiling that was not finished well. Because of the sheen light bounced off every seam. My ceiling looked striped. In my current home I used the same paint on the walls and ceiling in the bathrooms. The ceilings in this house are as smooth and perfect as the walls. I will still use flat in the larger, moisture free rooms. Most homes do not have near perfect ceilings. I have also had times where some of the rooms were near white and some had more color and times where I had mid tones throughout. No matter what your doing you need to have a plan that makes the look as you go from one room to the next feel cohesive. For me, the all white was definitely the easiest. One color, multiple finishes. When I decided to change things up a bit I kept the same whites on the ceilings and trim throughout the house and just changed wall colors, making sure that each choice worked with the wall colors in the adjacent rooms. When I decided to go darker and picked mid tones the white on the ceilings were too much of a contrast for me. I really like the "Ceiling is a 5th Wall" concept. The problem was, I didn't have consistent flooring throughout the home. If the flooring, wall color and ceiling color changes as you move from room to room it will give a disjointed feeling to the home. You need something that joins them together. I used the mid toned neutral from the main living area for the walls and ceilings in the main living area and for the ceilings in the other rooms. (Was given this advice by a Gretchen Schauffler, founder of Devine Color Paint). I also kept the trim color consistent from room to room. In my current home I will have consistent flooring throughout except for 3 rooms. Foyer, guest bedroom and guest bath. This is a deliberate design choice that works with the layout of the home. The trim throughout the house will again be consistent, but the ceilings are matching the walls in each of the rooms. Every time you choose to change one room and don't give thought to the surrounding spaces you run the risk of either having a disjointed space or having that one room cause a domino effect and moving from room to room fixing what is now wrong and causing angst. Will Swiss Coffee trim and ceilings look good throughout the home or do you only want this in the bedroom? If not I may still do Swiss Coffee on the ceiling, but would pick a lighter white that has more versatility than Swiss Coffee for the trim so I would be able to use the trim color throughout the house.

If you have a high ceiling and an opening to a second floor (which it looks like you do in your first picture), you do need a fan to push the warm air down. My husband the engineer recommends a DC type fan because they are quieter. We just bought two last year. Minka Aire has some DC models. I can't tell how large the room is, but you would probably be OK with a 52". Most of them come with lights now. The one you have is really unique! :-)

Why? Any successful basement color scheme is dependant upon lighting. A white ceiling will help illiminate the whole. Color will shift with lighting. Have color(s) under consideration mixed in small amounts and apply to choose one to your liking. We’ve selected several different grays in our basement. They are SW. We also have abundant lighting.
