I've still got currants on the bush too. My sons eat them, the birds are more interested in the raspberries and unripe grapes. I've added a mulberry because my wife and son have been eating them from a tree planted in a local church when we go on our walks. ~Chills

I'd sure try an apple and see - very often, snow cover isn't enough to freeze anything, and some varieties of apples can take a fairly heavy frost and still taste wonderful - this is an old orchard area, and a lot of the old timers won't pick any apples until they've had several frosts. This year, my Pink Lady and Roma were wonderful, a few days after night temps dropped down to 17º, 28º, and 30º. OTOH, if they were frozen, then they likely would be mushy.

I do not like the modern hybrids. I prefer the original real Mexican Jalapeno. The American hybridizers want a lower heat Jalapeno. They think the public wants low heat. They probably are correct. When you find one that suits your taste make sure to save seeds. Mexicans tend to like their hot peppers hot. Americans like their peppers cool. You might also look for real Mexican Serrano. And on this one, all those little leaves and branches down low, they hold grow up really big and tall. This one is gonna be big and fruitful.... Ex specially since I just added some fresh soil on top, with some leaves I picked. I added the fresh inch of soil to support those new branches down low, and also protect the roots rom the sun. I had some roots growing out of the top
