Interior stair balusters (wood vs. iron, spacing, etc.)
Comments (12)Is this maybe a steel-framed house??? The clear spans you will have if those support posts are both removed look awfully long for traditional LVL joists. I can imagine maybe taking out the post next to the stairs but seriously, that other post looks like it HAS to be structural. Builders sometimes make mistakes. I would definitely insist that my builder put it in writing that that post is merely decorative and that he had checked with an engineer to verify that it is not structural and can be removed. Otherwise you'll be midway thru the build and he'll come back telling you "gee sorry, turns out I was wrong and those posts have to be there after all." And at that point your only option will be to let him put the posts in or have the second floor cave in on you. Trust me, I've been there, done that... and the span where I had to put in a totally unwanted support post is not nearly as wide as yours looks....See MoreAre iron balusters and newel posts strong enough for interior ?
Comments (12)"I think there is only one way to install the king metal components. Is there a method that is best?" King makes many any styles. Some are NOT allowed in residential (like the cable systems a child could climb or fit their head/body through). Without more detail about EXACTLY what you are trying to do, no one can give you useful advice. The best method for ANY newel post is to bolt it solidly to the side of a joist. If a joist is not in the correct spot, blocking is added to create a mounting surface as deep as the joist. Any type of toe-nailing, tow screwing, etc. or fastening to the floor or subfloor (no mater how many brackets you use) is markedly weaker. You have a solid post 3-4 feet high making a nice lever to apply loading to the fasteners. How much force will a 150 pound person create on the fasteners when they 'spin' around the newel holding with one hand?...See MoreNeed to drill a hole through 12' of wood, boring bit gets stuck
Comments (39)Hello, I am glad to see that this is a form that likes to help people, I am very new to working with wood. I had an idea and wanted it to be real so I found some logs that are 7in wide and 12-13in, I also have one that is 4in wide and 12-13in tall. My goal is to hollow these out but leave maybe an inch on the bottom left to make a wood cup. All I have for tools is a cordless drill Dewalt 14v, some reg drill bits and a spade 1in bit and a wood saw. I have tried upswing the spade bit but after pushing on the wood for about a min and seeing nothing but a little hole from the tip I knew that this can't be the right tool. Any advice? Side note I don't have much money but I am willing to spend a little to get the correct tool....See MoreDecorating modern farmhouse when stuck with wood colored trim
Comments (22)Just redefine your terms and adjust your "farmhouse" design inspirations to include wood tones. If you are only watching Joanna Gaines that's all youre going to see- and want. However, there are plenty of other takes on "contemporary farmhouse" out there. I honestly am not getting why browns/beiges/greiges are ok for painted surfaces, but not the same color in a wood stain. Yellow-golds, grays and whites are classic .... would fit quite nicely with your ca. 1980s gold toned wood. Re above statements that white trim will never go out of style.... well ya, some truth to that but the drab colorless interiors, the monotone white on white will. Mark my words, people in the not too distant future will be cursing the latex paint that soaked into the pores of their brick and caused it to spall, wondering "what were they thinking." Lets not forget that there was a time when people thought that a popcorn ceiling and metallic blobs of paint sponged onto every conceivable surface was a good idea!...See MoreLilly Phillip
