Air Fryers - Are they worth it?
Comments (11)I used mine today! I have the small Philips Air Fryer since I'm cooking for one. I bought it to save having to heat up my large oven for small portions. I think it works best on frozen veggies compared to fresh. I shop Trader Joe's, so with the good quality of many frozen foods, I use mine 1-3 times a week. I'm retired, so I fix three meals a day. It's handy and energy-efficient. A cup of TJ's frozen sweet potato fries with five of their chicken drumettes takes 16 minutes and they cook side-by-side since both foods were pre-cooked before being frozen....See MoreLovin my air fryer!
Comments (13)This post inspired me to drag my Galloping Gourmet Convection Oven, Sam's Club circa 1983, up from the basement and have another go at air frying. It's sitting on the counter; I'm otherwise involved with drywall work and living on fast food. (FYI, the 'Power Bowls' (steak) from Taco Bell are darned good and the Arby's 2/ $5 fish sandwiches aren't half bad. I never really gave the convection oven a chance; I did try air frying chicken and wasn't happy with the results but I was (in hindsight) trying to do a 'Southern Fried Chicken' with too heavy of a buttermilk batter. Will give it another go trying a much lighter breading. Just wish that I still had an oil mister. Per Lars suggestion, will try it with some frozen breaded okra that I snagged at Woodman's last week. But I need to modify the rack so the okra doesn't fall thru. That will be week after next. DS is in Ireland & I'm trying to get a lot accomplished in his quarters while he is OOTC....See MoreAir Fryer/Convection Oven
Comments (3)It is hard to compare because there are some convection ovens the really move air, others not as much. There are some that have “convection roast” or all convection modes that use a higher speed fan. Even these vary in some of the ovens I have used. “True” convection is just a marketing term that means you have a third element or set of elements in the back. Even these can be used differently brand to brand. Short of trying it to see, are you happy with what your oven does now? Maybe there is something about the convenience factor that would make it worthwhile to have. For me I would think it is smaller so heats quickly and you could use it outside in the summer so you wouldn’t heat up the kitchen....See MoreDo you have an air fryer?
Comments (54)Murraysmom, I feel the same way about the book. I didn't expect the recipes to be quite so elaborate, but the book has lots of good information. Plus it's beautiful! My DIL made the Cheeseburger Slider Pockets last night. She's a vegetarian, but she said my son and grandson said they were great. She substituted ground turkey because that's what she had. I may try the sweet potato fries tonight. PS: I did try the sweet potato fries, and they were great! I gave up on the mandoline (that's my usual response to it), and cut them by hand. Tried to make them a uniform 1/4" but I'm sure the size varied a bit. Gave them only a slight spray of oil, which didn't get all the pieces, but that was okay. I cooked them a little longer in the second stage (400º) than the 10 minutes stated in the recipe. Really enjoyed them. I'll make the rest tomorrow....See MorePatricia Colwell Consulting
