Full Replacement Questions, Resources?!? Woodwright vs. E-series?
Comments (25)Bumping this thread after two years because I don't understand those Consumer Reports ratings either (the ratings referred to above are still the current ones). Would any of the Pros care to speak to this? Marvin was not even on the list, and it was in the top tier a year or two before the current list. Pella is near top of the current list and not a favored brand here. Kolbe (another favorite) is way down the list. Consumer Reports is an independent and trustworthy source for most of us so thanks for helping us understand!...See MoreFull frame replacement without removing interior trim?
Comments (6)It's an old window with pulleys and weights behind the jambs. There is a space for the weights and then there seems to be another wood frame embedded in the blocks. The jambs frame the sashes and an outer frame frames the weight pockets and the jambs. It may be only this outer frame that is attached to the masonry. So you think it is possible to remove the brickmold and jambs while leaving the stool and interior molding in place, and use a full frame replacement (with a full depth jamb and not a 3 1/4 inch jamb)? The interior trim may be nailed to the outer frame and this is what would make this possible. But I am not sure how this could be anything other than a hack job. I have only found this one mention of it anywhere. Thanks for any comments!...See MoreMarvin Infinity Fiberglass - Full Frame Replacement Pricing?
Comments (11)Since we live in the Denver area we were looking at fiberglass because it is supposedly hail proof (we are tired of disrupting our lives for home/auto hail damage). We have Milgard vinyl in our current home (original builder grade from 2006) and they are junk...parts breaking, windows hard to operate, etc. so we wanted something in our new home that would that give use better longevity. Furthermore, it seems like fiberglass models give you more window and less frame which is appealing because we want as much light as possible. Finally, it seems like wood windows are a maintenance issue...fading We plan on getting bids from Milgard (hopefully their is a big difference from their builder grade product) and maybe Pella. We also have a 2nd Marvin Infinity dealer in town but their reviews are not that great. Other suggestions on a quality fiberglass option would be appreciated but it seems like there are fewer options....See MoreReplacement window vs Full Frame window
Comments (8)20% would be pretty extreme IMO. Glass loss may be a little more than a "non-issue" in some cases, but 20% is high, and furthermore there are many times where it can be truly negligible. Think about an old double hung window with an aluminum storm that sits on the blind stops and measures about 2.5"+ from frame to viewable glass. This is extremely common (at least in my area), and that is just about where a reasonably slim lined replacement window can measure for visible glass as well, within a 1/4" or so. I think we can agree that the measurement of viewable glass on the prime window sash of that original wood window is irrelevant if it is impeded by the view of a storm window frame. Is 20% loss possible? Sure. Depending on the window coming out and the window going in, but I tend to agree that the glass loss is indeed overstated, and that the number would generally be far less than 20%....See MoreMary Elizabeth
