Comments (2)Compost, during the digestion phase, should feel about as wet as a well wrung out sponge, It takes a lot of moisture to feel any in that sponge if it is well wrung out. Too much water, moisture, in compost will replace the air the digesting bacteria also need to function and that will slow down to whole process if not stop it altogether. Most insect larva need a fairly moist environment to hatch and grow, an environment that is too moist for the bacteria that digest that vegetative waste. Insect pests are not good digesters of compost....See MoreWhat are these small white flies - not fruit fly or fungus gnat

Comments (15)Those bugs look like stink bugs to me. I'm not an expert, but they have some similar characteristics. Regardless, as gardengal has pointed out several times, there's no damage on the plant. Also this plant has no edible parts. I don't see a problem. I would scatter a handful of compost under the plant and another handful of cornmeal or alfalfa pellets. Further I would spray it with molasses and water (3 ounces per quart), as a general good practice to improve the health of the microbes living on the exterior of the plant. Stink bugs don't like being sprayed with this, but that's not really the point of spraying....See MorePreventing and getting rid of fungus gnats and other bugs

It may not be enough to change the pH of the soil drastically/rapidly, but that depends on the size of the pot, the mix in the pot, the water, the fertilizer, and a zillion other potential factors. Since it's impossible to control for that many variables, it's FAR easier just to test the pH every once in a while. It's simple, cheap, takes no time at all, and gives you good data to make sure your potting mix matches your plant's needs. A 2 pack of 80 litmus strips is less than $5 at Walmart, less on Amazon, more at CVS. Scoop out a spoonful of soil from your pot into a small cup, make a slurry with it and the water you use to water the plant, stick the strip in for a few seconds, pull it out, wait for result, compare to color key on package...and done! And 160 strips will last for ages if you store them in a ziploc in a dark place....See MoreNeed2SeeGreen 10 (SoCal)
