Getting rid of Fungus Gnats
Comments (3)The big issue with fungus gnats is the larvae eat the tiny rootlets. I don't know what the trade names in Oz is for B. thuringiensis israelensis, the strain of Bt that works for mosquitos, but it works very well on the larvae of fungus gnats as well. Here, I can buy "mosquito dunks" which are small floating discs that contain the bacteria, and I soak several of them in water for a few days, then use this to water all the plants in the green house. Does a fine job....See MoreGetting rid of GNATS
Comments (14)In another similar thread somebody (I think KKfromNJ), mentioned a very good way to eliminate FG. Use just 1 teaspoon/gallon of GA "Knock-Out-Gnats" EVERY time you water, specially from day-one to inoculate the soil with the BT (bacteria). The BT only kills FG larvae (not eggs or adults), has something to do that disrupts their digestive system. Adults can be killed using regular insecticides (including soap) or place some of those yellow sticky sheets - horizontal is better the vertical). The adults are harmless, but a pain. Remember some sneaking up to my bedroom, and one day, I inhaled one though my nose - sen lurking around -and suddenly I felt a big 'itch' in my nose - guess it was it's frantic to escape my nose filtering hair... The larvae, which feed on decaying matter and ROOTS, DO the damage. I think that I only managed to see them only once - ~1/4" long translucent with a dark line along the middle (guess their gut) worm/moggot like critters. Also, somebody else (forgot who), mentioned that they seem to like MG potting soil (which I also use); either it already comes infested with (maybe eggs) or there is something in it that they specially like....See MoreHow to get rid of fungus gnats without pesticides
Comments (5)My grandfather used to control gnats in the house in a similar fashion. Put a banana peel in your stainless sink and let the gnats gather there. Bring in a small propane torch and make a quick pass over the peels. You might be able to use a bananal peel to lure the gnats away from your plant before you hit them with the heat gun. Somehow, I'm in love with the heat gun trick. It just seems very manly!...See MoreGetting rid of gnats?
Comments (17)I use one of those plastic Folgers coffee containers. It has a snap-on lid, and I keep the lid on it all the time. It tends to get full pretty quickly, and on days when I'm processing things I have to dump it several times, but normally it holds about one day's worth. After I dump it, I wash it before putting it back into use. I don't seem to be having much problem with fruit flies, at least not yet, and DH always has bananas laying out on the counter. I remember one year I had some kind of bugs flying around and I had a little trouble figuring out why. Finally I discovered the problem. I had dehydrated some bananas and I had three one-gallon zip-lock bags of them up in the cabinet. The insects had actually eaten holes in the plastic to get at the contents and all three bags were ruined and had to be thrown out. Now when I store dehydrated produce, it's in the freezer. I'm trying out storing a bag of dehydrated apples in one of those five-gallon buckets that I bought wheat in. It has a really tight-fitting lid. If that is problem-free I can save some freezer space in the future. There is also some kind of fruit-fly or gnat or whatever that infests houseplants. If you examine the plant carefully, you can see the little critters milling around on top of the soil, and in and around the leaves of the plant. In years past, I've killed them by setting the plant down inside a paper grocery bag, dropping a mothball into the bag and then putting another bag, upside down, over the one that's right-side up. I learned from Dawn that you shouldn't use mothballs for stuff like this and in fact have gotten rid of what I had. I keep thinking about my Grammy Britt and how she used to store things in mothballs so much that her house always had that mothball smell. She died of liver cancer when I was 15, and she was only in her early 70's. I don't keep very many plants in the house any more so I don't have any recommendations about what to use instead of the mothball method....See MoreU S
