Just tried to post photos again...i think it worked this time? Dining room color is currently cathedral gray from Behr...to dark and has purple undertones that I dont love...

I would NOT select a gray for the walls. That is making your cabinets appear more orange. I would select a neutral from your floor tile and use it in both rooms to visually connect them.

• Replace the fan with a chandelier over the table. If you require blowing air then get an air mover for the room (that info can be provided)
• Select some patterned drapery panels for the window
• Select some colorful artwork to add more interest to the room.

If you provide some decent images of the DR without all the clutter, some of us can probably render a new appearance for the room. Also take a picture from the DR looking back at the kitchen.

wow. those cabs are really yellow against the warm gray flooring. What has happened is the clear coat on the cabs have ambered with time. to lessen it, make sure your bulbs are a brighter white. at least 4000K temp.

You've chose very taupe/cooler tones gray, and haven't taken into account the warm yellow/orange tone of the wood. So both are fighting each other. If you have plans on painting those cabs one day, it will look a lot better.

Try putting on some pulls (not knobs) on the cabs to help break up the yellow color.

as for the dining room, do you have diff flooring in there? you have real wood against the fake wood in the kitchen?

thanks so much for the input...we are in the middle of a few projects, hence the clutter in the DR. I'm at work so cant add a new photo right now, will try later.

-The photo of the kitchen is taken standing directly between kitchen and dining room (literally one foot in each room)...can add a photo later from further into DR

-Since my floor tile is gray/white I there isn't another neutral to pull from the tile..what would you recommend?

-Replacement of ceiling fan is in the works :)

In the kitchen, I would pull a white tone out of your floor and use that instead of gray. A true gray will enhance the orange in your cabinets because they are almost complementary colors (blue & orange). For the dining room, look at 244 & 245 strips on the Sherwin fandeck for grays but I would love to see something more fun like navy.

@BethH- yes we have the hardwood throughout the house but ceramic tile plank in the kitchen. Thanks for the advice...you think it's ok to paint both kitchen and dining room the same color? or would you go a shade or 2 darker in dining (that was advice I was given, but I am happy to have same color in both rooms if it looks ok..)...Re: the cabinets: it's been an issue between my husband and I- I would love to paint the cabs, he only likes cabinets that "look like real wood" (even if it is hideous;) We don't have budget for new or refacing cabinets at this time...so Im stuck with it for now...will continue to push for painting them though :)

I would use same color in both rooms and paint ceiling same color too. Lower ceilings feel higher doing this. When ceiling is white, the line between ceiling and wall is like wearing a belt if you are shirt. Cuts you in half! I would consider a light sage green. That would help balance out your cabinet orange tones. Some great lighting will be best investment. I will look for some inspiration photos. Bbl

I've tried to select colors pulled from your floor. You need new light fixtures above the sink and over the stove. Why not find something a bit more decorative.

Take a look at SW Comfort Gray. Very pretty color with the oak cabinets.

I like a lot of the lighter colors that Beth posted above for your kitchen. I used Pale Oak and it worked with grays and my oak woodwork. Go light! Then you can probably leave the dark paint in the dining room, which will look darker in contrast.

Another one to consider is Sherwin William's Aesthetic White, on the walls here, and the chart below: ( love that metal tone for a fixture above your sink). This would work with your floors and help remove some of the heaviness the cabinets have. Maybe replace the door on that smaller cabinet to the right of the sink wth glass, or take that cabinet down altogether.

Light colors are on trend, but keep in mind, the more contrast you create with the oak the more the cabinets will stand out.
