every county has a soil conservation district office ... in spring.. and sometimes in fall .. they off native ... small... stock.... for wind break purposes ... another word for a wind break.. is a sight break ... e.g. they sell pines in my area.. 25 for $16 .... at about one foot tall .... so you might be able to cover a lot of ground ... for not a lot of money.. with stock that is chosen for your county ... the lists usually offer trees.. conifers.. and shrubs .... thats were i would start ... let us know what they suggest .... ken ps: no matter what you decide to do .... go diverse .. a nice mixture of many different types of things for your project ...

Might want to try Rus aromatica 'Gro-low' (selection of native sumac). It stays a couple of feet high at most but spreads well. Leaves are small, shiny, dark green; fall color is a nice red. I have a patch in my native corner, and it has filled in very nicely without any care except in the first year. Another possibility is northern sea oats. You are welcome to come dig some out of my garden, they spread prolifically and deer don't eat them. Nice seed heads in fall, strong root systems.

Hi Bruce thanks so much! This is basically a companion plant for a Quick Fire. I was thinking about a Ninebark for the purple...I think I want some purple! I have a 'Baby Blue Eyes' and a Black Hills Spruce paired up on the other side of this plant, and I could be interested in a conifer, but I'm not sure what would not get so big and look good with the pink of the Quick Fire. Which is why I was leaning toward purple, and the nine bark might be great. I was thinking Summer Wine for the disease resistance, but it isn't supposed to get that tall and don't nine barks generally need to be hacked down every few years to get them to grow nicely? That's why they weren't on my top list. The Seibold is interesting. I have a Nannyberry and three other viburnums that my builder installed so pollination shouldn't be an issue!

thank you for the responses. Yes I am planning on planting Cape Honeysuckle, fountaingrass, Ceanothus: Concha, Skylark, Lantana, some Agaves and Salvia Leucantha. The nursery said it wasn't too late to plant but I had read waiting until fall was best but I was more concerned for the clay soil what was best because many have stated online that its best to plant in clay before it becomes bone dry from the July/August heat.
