with the rising number of Covid 19 cases all over the country. My daughter is working in Rhode Island at a country club and has just worked during two events, one of which was a wedding with 45 guests. Most not wearing masks, some wearing them but pulling them down to talk to her and other workers during a non-help-yourself-buffet. They were supposed to wait in small numbers to be served but didn't. Also she told me they were walking up maskless and sticking their faces inches from the food.

Now she is sick. She has a covid 19 test scheduled for Tuesday and can't work. Really makes me angry. She does wear a mask. Hopefully she will be negative and be okay. Apparently the country club members hardly ever wear masks on any given day. They also make comments that the workers shouldn't be wearing them either.

I'm so sorry. I'm sorry she can't quit. I'm sorry she can't stand up and yell "Take this job and shove it you maskless .... !"

Can she possibly find a different job? Can she report the country club to her state's health department?

If it isn't a mandate, then I wouldn't think reporting the CC to the health department would do any good.

I'll be saying a prayer for her, hoping it's something normal and easy to recover from.

Thanks for the feedback, bindersbeeÂsounds like youÂve gotten some valuable experience organizing your event. Too bad you donÂt live here or IÂd draft you : ) We do have answers for some things you bring up, but others I hadnÂt even thought of yet. Size and advertising Traditionally, our neighborhood (like most historic neighborhoods in our city) has had an annual or bi-annual home tour to raise funds. In the past, these have attracted from less than 1,000 to over 6,000 people. The best year for our neighborhood was when we had significant media coverage in the local paper and magazine, related to a major neighborhood re-development project. Most years, these events do not draw media coverage because they are frequent and the offerings donÂt change much from year to year. In recent years, attendance has dropped off, even though advertising has increased. We speculate this is because the neighborhood has matured, there are less renovations going on, and the freshness is gone. We would continue paid advertising for an event like this, but IÂm hopeful that a gardening event geared towards urban and small gardens would draw the media coverage weÂve been lacking recently. Downtown living is a hot topic, and putting the urban/small garden angle on it is something no one in our city has done yet. I like the idea of making contact with various groups that might be interested in this type of eventÂ.targeted marketing to gardeners (pinning down the downtown/small space crowd is a bit more nebulous, though we do have 2 monthly newspapers specifically for downtown dwellers). When are you going to hold the event? Good question. IÂm planning on getting input from the local businesses that might see increased business as a result of this event. IÂd guess that late spring/early summer would be best from that perspective, because IÂd think that the earlier in the gardening season this is held, the more business theyÂre likely to get from attendees. OTOH, an event in late summer/early fall would more likely have better weather and neighborhood gardens would probably be looking better than early in the season. Can you maybe add a 'farmer's market' or produce sharing of some sort? ThatÂs an idea we should throw into the mix. There are a number of farmers markets throughout our city in the summer, but mixing something into the food vendor area might work. Parking/Potties/Food WeÂve dealt with the parking and food vendors before for our home tours. Parking is on the street, and we set up food vendors in one of the parks. WeÂve not had to set up port a potties with the home toursÂ.there have always been some public buildings included on the tour where restrooms are available. What a great project! I attended the Chicago event and loved it. Attendance was depressingly low because it was frigid and raining that whole week - really awful weather. The Chicago one was in a dedicated space where all the gardens were in one giant tent-like building. (Tent isn't correct - it was a HUGE temporarly building.) The event was billed as having "realistic" gardens, but truthfully only a handful were what I would call realistic. The vast majority had lots of architecture added in, outrageous fountains, outdoor rooms, crazily abundant plantings etc., that your average person just doesn't have in the yard. There were a small handful of more realistic settings with more average, but beautiful, arrangements, and those were my favorites since I was looking for ideas about what I could actually implement myself. Sounds like you might like to have a garden walk component as well as, or instead of, a temporary display space. I think that would be great. It broke my heart to think of all the effort and beautiful stuff that literally was only at the Chicago one for a week. What a waste! But getting decorators to do private balconies might be a trick. I believe the Chicago event had some major sponsors, like Target donating a $million. Sorry, I really am just rambling, but I wish you luck on setting it up!

When hubby & I got married almost 3 years ago, we were going to have a small informal wedding, maybe Vegas. We'd both been married before (me twice, him once) but the more we thought about it, the more we realized what was really important to us. We both agreed that we wanted nice photos to hang & show off. Neither of us had a real wedding- Justice of the peace. Photos meant dressing up & since I'd never had a gown before went with a nice beaded wedding gown without a train. It was beautiful but fairly simple. We both decided we wanted really nice scenery & to be married in a garden. We decided on Cypress Gardens in FL in Nov during the mum festival. We brought no family with us but invited his son & wife (they didn't make it- she was afraid to fly after 911) plus a family friend that lived there as well as an internet friend of mine & her hubby. It was low key, inexpensive but was a day we will never forget. I think since it was just the 2 of us it meant more to us. I felt like a princess walking around the park for pictures with my gown on. Afterwards we treated everyone to dinner. I just looked up Ottawa, looks like a really pretty state. Well, usually the two fathers make a toast at the reception, so I would spend some time developing some sweet and meaningful thoughts or reminiscenses. This will not be the usual reception after the wedding, but still she may want to have a father-bride and mother-groom dance if that works at the restaurant they have chosen. We simplified it all and our bride started the dance with her father, and half way through the song, the groom waltzed his mother onto the dance floor to join them. Perhaps with such a small gathering, no dancing will occur or be desired. I also think it is nice to present the bride with a special family memento for her wedding day. My mother wore the family wedding crucifix necklace that everyone in her family had worn for generations. My sister more sensibly had it woven into her bouquet as it was huge and not very attractive. We gave our daughter a family diamond which we had set in a simple lavilere for her to wear on her wedding day. I would be sure that the table is set with a pretty floral arrangement, but one that is not going to block the guests ability to see each other and to chat because it is too tall. Prior to the wedding, perhaps even the week before, the bride might want to have some professional studio shots taken of her so that the parents and groom can have a photographic memento to frame. This is the kind of thing one does not particularly value at the time, but becomes so special to have after some years have passed. I do think your daughter has decided she really does not want a wedding with all the frou-frou, so do be careful and discuss this with her. Attitude is everything. Congratulations, Mom!

I don't know what the mandates are where you live, if the local health department would check for compliance or if that is even applicable there.

I'm not at all clear on how these things differ from state to state and how I've wished for some national direction, same rules for all of us coast to coast. It feels a little defeating to keep trying to do our part and seeing the virus numbers (and sometimes the deaths) still increase around us.

I'm so sorry she's sick. Hopefully not Covid, but still a rude awakening if she has something else that was contagious that points to a lapse in protection for her. As she tries to work to support herself. Let us know how she does, please.

In some places private venues aren't covered by mandates. I'm so sorry she's being put through this; hopefully, she will test negative...if she was wearing her mask and being careful with hand washing, she's got a pretty good chance, I would think.

How awful to hold an event and risk all your loved ones, as well as the servers and others working and then find out some of them got the virus because of your refusal to postpone your wedding, or at least postpone the celebration. Not an auspicious beginning in my mind.

I'm a country club brat. I feel for your daughter. That's a hard crowd to be around.

I hope she tests negative. It's strep, cold & flu season. Chances are...she's fine. Fingers crossed. I'm just getting over strep, my DH had a cold.

Shortly after our churches were open again I heard of a small church wedding where the reception was in a local hotel. It was PACKED. People were sat shoulder to shoulder. It is a national tragedy so many get their undies in a bunch over wearing masks when it's common curtesy to care about other's, wait staff and store associates rights should be protected better. Truth is most of us don't know anyone who has caught this..so we become complacent. The longer the fight goes on the more likely we get exhausted with the fight. Kathsgrdn the chances of your daughter not coming through the next few days just fine are very small. I hate the unwarranted FEAR so many experience in all of this. Remember 97.8% of those who have had it are just fine!!!

I'm so sorry your daughter isn't feeling well, hope her test is negative. A cousin in the family is expecting and my daughter and I received invites to a baby shower. I would have loved to go and see extended family but didn't feel it would be wise. We put together a gift and mailed it to the person giving the shower.

It's just frustrating, more than likely it isn't covid 19. It is just now interrupting her life because of these idiots who refuse to give a ____ about anyone else. Thanks for letting me vent. Not going to change anything, I know.

An event with 45 guests is small.

It seems your daughter has been struggling to find substantive employment with less risk. I recall she had problems at the Cheesecake Factory some months ago.

Encourage her to maybe return to school to pursue a course of study to qualify for better and more career oriented employment. Or, maybe she should consider the military?

It just shows non-N95 masks won't protect YOU. Get her some (Menards is in stock online). Wear them yourselves.

Twice a week for months now the gov of my state mentions gatherings as the reason the virus keeps spreading and killing people here. Weddings, funerals, birthday parties, backyard bbq's, ... People who know better still behave otherwise. Week after week after week. It just gets worse.

I hope your girl is okay Kath. I also hope she can quit this infectious job.

Call the local health dept. Enough complaints may get the place shut at least long enough to get attention.

I don't think she will quit, she needs the money. She did mention going back to NKU in the Spring but will then have to find another job up there to support herself.
