Dinner smells devine!

Thanksgiving in Canada is celebrated in early October. I decided to cook dinner today rather than tomorrow. I have a turkey in my turkey roaster, a ham in my smoker outside and a pot of fruit and spices in my slow cooker just to make the house smell even better. My mouth has been watering for close to two hours. Two more to go and we can eat. The kids are coming over. My husband will start the firepit soon, because even though it's a 'balmy' 17C in Calgary which is normally a nice temperature, there's a cool breeze. The fire will keep us warmer. Social distancing outdoors while eating together together is important.

If you have Instagram, here's some "before" shots of todays dinner. Hopefully I remember to post the "it's done" shots too. The smoker is probably the best thing I bought this year. (I bought my Canon 5Dmiv on the 27th last year otherwise that would've been my best buy hahha!) Food just tastes so much better in the smoker. In the Spring, hopefully Easter, I want to try a turkey in the smoker. So far, I've made two big batches of smoked salmon. It's to die for delicious.

Happy Thanksgiving to Debby and my fellow Cdn peeps!!

I'm not cooking a turkey for myself, I'll just cook up some chicken pieces, brussels sprouts and mashed potatoes.

But I did make an apple crostata this morning. (apples aren't burned, it's the cinnamon and nutmeg)

Sigh, we usually head from Illinois to DH’s family in Ontario this weekend for Thanksgiving dinner. Last few years, no one can accommodate the whole family in their houses (our generation has downsized, and the next generation is still in rentals, starters, and condos) so we’ve gone to a restaurant. Nice, because no one has to jump up and down to bring food or clear or clean up, and we can spend more time visiting, but I miss the scents! And this year, we can’t go at all.

Pull-out garbage/recycling always smells....yuk!

Wow - I have never had a problem with odors and we put everything in our 2-bin pullout - and it sometimes sits for days until it's full. We do lightly rinse the recyclables (per our County's request), but we don't heavily rinse them. We put food scraps (meat, bones, etc.) in the trash bin all the time! [Since we are on septic we do try to limit what we put in the GD somewhat.] We've been using ours for almost 4 years now (I can't believe it's been that long since we remodeled!) The trash pullout is one of the many "best things" about our kitchen - no more dogs getting into the trash, no more trash in the open, etc. (Our standard poodles quickly learned how to "step on the pedal" to open our trash can in our old kitchen!)

My famous Chinese fried rice wasn't so famous with brown rice. I guess there are sacrifices to make and it was doable but wouldn't have made me famous if I'd been making it with brown rice all these years! But in all fairness, I didn't start out right. I put the rice in the water before it came to a boil. THEN read the directions :o It was too moist and gummy. It was Mahatma Brown Rice. I'll look for a different brand next time. I've had brown rice several times and enjoyed it but this, not so much. We've eaten the white Bamati but it's too strong for Chinese fried rice. Thanks everyone.

I was alone on Thanksgiving once (hubby working in Singapore) and cooked a cornish game hen in a cast iron dutch oven on top of the wood stove. I used the dutch oven cover to cover the dutch oven it to make it more oven like rather than letting all the heat escape. My hen turned a beautiful golden brown and was delicious. After the hen was done, I also baked a pumpkin pie in the dutch oven on top of the wood stove. It was the best pumpkin pie I've ever made. Why did I do all that cooking on top the wood stove rather than on my perfectly good gas range/oven you ask? Because I was alone, had plenty of time on my hands and I was thinking about how the pioneers cooked their food over a fire and I wanted to see if I could do it. Turns out I could and did.

Happy Thanksgiving, and good appetite, it sounds like a feast!! I wish we had your temps, we are still running the air conditioner. This weekend is another scorcher with temps close to 100 (38 C). Our area in TX used to cool off in early September, but that hasn't happened in several years.

Oh my, your dinner looks wonderful. I have a turkey I'd planned to cook this summer and do porch deliveries of turkey and rolls, then didn't. Shame on me. Although mine would not have been as pretty as yours woven with bacon.

I don't know what we might do for Thanksgiving in Washington. It surely won't be warm enough to eat outside at Thanksgiving here and for my family to be together, travel is involved. I don't think that will take place.

O so we are celebrating for Canada since i made turkey with all of the trimmings for supper tonight. It did smell good.

IMO, nothing smells better than a turkey roasting in the oven!! And Thanksgiving dinner - turkey with all the trimmings - is about my favorite thing to eat. I fixed a turkey breast recently (and homemade oven-baked dressing) and while it tasted great, it didn't match up well scent-wise.

It'll just be me and the dog this Thanksgiving....and for Christmas as well. My local family bubble will be out of town over both holidays and it's too much fuss and bother with everything else going on to trek to the rest of the family. And tbh, it doesn't bother me in the slightest to be at home on my own......in fact, I rather enjoy it :-)

My birthday is in another week or so and I will see all relevant parties then!

Last night we did salmon with my niece and her family and tonight it's turkey dinner with my son and his wife. All are in our bubble.

Happy Thanksgiving to all of you up north.

But it seems strange to me to have Thanksgiving before fall turkey hunting season which is in October here. Smoked wild turkey breast is hard to beat.
