We are moving from an medium sized English Tudor to a massive Dutch Colonial here in Queens, NYC. I am daunted by the size- 7 bathrooms, 5 bedrooms, etc. I am even more daunted by the task of stipping all of the wallpaper down and painting all of the rooms. What do you suggest for paint colors particularly for the foyer? We haven't any still photos of the house as we are not in yet, just this slide show that only shows some of the rooms. I love it without the shutters, but since it's such a classic (and stunning) home, shutters are probably in order. I'll let others comment on that. What would add layering to what you think is a flat look is amazing landscaping. Get a designer from a small garden center to help design a landscaping plan that will add shapes, color, and depth to your beautiful house. Note: this house doesn't need shutters since the gardens add so much to the house.

My dad, product of the Depression, always thought you had to have all the furnishings as soon as you moved. So, many of the furniture, paint, window covering decisions my mother made quickly without considering how we would live in the house. My pace of decorating made him crazy (or he thought I was crazy?!). I move, then spend lots of time watching how the sunlight affects each room. Do I need a big sofa or a smaller one with trimmer chairs? Do I need to block the view of the neighbors with blinds or do I want the moonrise to be featured? What color paint is always after I pick fabric because it is easier to match paint to fabric than try to find a drapery that matches already painted surfaces. I shop at antique shops and consignment stores. Decorating my house is not a job that has to be on a time clock. Move in and let the house guide you. Have fun. Let your style evolve. You don’t have to be tied to a style: good design is timeless. Make yourself and your family comfortable and happy.

I would do board and batten on the top same as the side. Stain the brick not paint it. pull out that giant shrub by the garage, extend and wrap the porch around to the side. add the curves into the landscape not the porch.
