Lino vs wood vs cork, which is more comfortable to stand on?

By lino I mean real linoleum not vinyl. I only have experienced wood but thinking in our next house I would like to use linoleum and cork throughout. Want surfaces that will be easy to clean, eco friendly and comfortable. Not more tile for me.

Which is the most comfortable?

Cork wins. Linoleum has a small amount of cork dust in it...but the total thickness of linoleum (the real stuff) is only a few millimeter thick (like 2-3mm). Compare that to a THIN cork glue down tile = 4mm. Now compare that to a nice 6mm cork glue down tile. Or how about a super thick cork tile with 8mm total cork.

Right. You get the idea. The more you get of the 'good stuff' the more comfort you get. Now to compare the pricing. Wow! You are in for a bit of a price shock. The real sheet linoleum is fantastically expensive. Even after 150 years of use, the industry still maintains a HIGH price tag. Yes these floors are nigh-on indestructible...but you are going to pay upfront for the longevity of the product. And you are signing up for some bi-yearly maintenance x100 years. That's how you get linoleum to last 100 years...you maintain it with polish that is applied every 6 months or so...for the rest of its life. And don't forget to strip it every 5 years or so...you don't want a build up of polish. And then you start the cycle all over again.

A cork glue down tile is going to have the same cost of install as a porcelain tile floor. I would expect a price of $18/sf for the installed/sealed 4mm - 6mm cork glue down tile. That's labour, glue and polyurethane included. The 8mm cork tile will increase that to $22/sf or so.

A cork FLOATING FLOOR will give you everything you want with a better price tag. Yes marmoleum has click together tiles. These will be more expensive than cork floating flooring. The cork floating flooring can be sealed once installed to create a water resistant floor. The marmoleum click tiles cannot be sealed and therefore the seams remain a higher risk space to penetrate to the fibreboard below.

And the comfort of the linoleum click floors = the cork UNDERLAY sitting on the back of the tiles...see...more cork = "mo'e better".

Hi Jockewing have you decided on a color yet? I agree with what above kittypawz said that you should use softer muted tones of blue in the wall and then bring out the brights in your bedding and curtains. I just went to a dinner party where the owners had SW comfort gray in the master bedroom and the effect was gorgeous. Of course it was evening and the lighting was soft(lamps), but I never imagined the color would be called gray as it looked like more a pale blue to me? If you want to go the other route and do light linens and bright walls, then go for a truer blue. If you do soft colored linens and muted colored walls, then the effect will be, well, drab. If you bring up comfort gray on the sherwin williams color tool website, the complimenting colors are Drizzle(bright aqua) and Nonchalant White. So maybe you can go for the Drizzle colored walls, and then tone everything down with pale colored linens and curtains? If you are going with the brown colored bedding, SW Hazel is a very pretty greenish blue color that goes wonderful with brown. Interesting Aqua(6220) is also a very pretty soft aqua color. It seems you are relying on the paint color to be the right shade of blue, but since you haven't decided on bedding yet, you are going for the color just to be the color rather than trying to match it with your linens. So if that;s the case, go for a truer blue b/c until you have everything in that room, every shade that is less than blue will look drab. Post pics after you've painted and put everything together so we can see the result. :)

I would say that it just depends. The best thing would be to talk to a realtor in your area as there are a lot of factors that can go into this. It depends on what level of house you have and the neighborhood it is in. Who would most likely purchase your house? If your house is higher end and would likely appeal to a family that is established and has a decent income, vinyl or laminate could both be a very poor choice. However, if your home is on the smaller side and most likely to appeal to a family just starting out, then either one could be acceptable.

Thanks for the replies. I have gotten samples of the cork flooring from Globus and didn't notice a smell and plan to order some of the glue to check that. I didn't realize that the cork is ground up before using adhesive to make it into sheets so will have to consider this too. To Ken - Is rift and quartered considered to be true quartersawn? When you say disaster, is this something like major standing water on the floor or a broken pipe? Do you think if I use 6" wide board and nail every 6" in the tongue and groove using quartersawn or quartered and rift, that I will have very low risk of cupping or other expansion/contraction related problems. I normally keep a dehumidifier running in the basement below the kitchen but am not the most diligent at keeping it running all the time. What do you think is the widest plank width I should go with before I run into significant risk of issues? Thanks! Dave

Given that we have actually attended the World of Concrete convention, I’d say I’m quite comfortable with the material. What you’re describing is pretty much a failure of the material in design or install, not typical. Even your average garage floor, which is the cheapest of the cheap in install and quality, doesn’t have the durability and etching issues you’re describing. The costs you’re describing are also WAY out of line for anything I have seen, even with fiber reinforced and stained, with multiple sealing passes. Especially on a slab, you’d be hard pressed to hit $12 a square foot all done and done unless you’re being seriously ripped off, especially on top of an existing slab - that makes everything easier :) Over timber framing the costs go up and the mitigation needed to create a good base becomes more complex, but still not significantly beyond a tile product. And the possibilities for design are vast (props to WoC again, I didn’t know half those techniques and products existed!). I agree it’s not a budget finish in some circumstances, but having a good mix design for residential finish application is NOT difficult to obtain, especially if you’re working with a good contractor and not just directly with the batch plant (easier but only if you know what you’re doing, like with any fabrication mill). I wouldn’t be scared off OP - if it is a look you want go for it. If you’re ‘meh’ about it, a cheap tile will be easier to manage, especially in a small space. But you can do a very nice job, even DIY, if you have a slab already and like the material. What can I say, I’m an optimist and concrete is fantastic stuff.
