I can personally recommend the Miele Olympus Canister Vacuum. I did A LOT of research and finally decided on this vacuum and I'm so happy with it. It's not loud like the others I looked at, it has many suction options, works fantastic on wood floors, tile and large area rugs. Another great thing is that it is light only 13lbs, easy to maneuver and it cleans SO WELL, you will not be disappointed with this vacuum. Miele is a German company that has been tried and true. No carpets - my vote would be central vac with Hide A Hose, without question! In a new build you have the perfect, one time opportunity to install one before the walls are closed up! I can't imagine using a Swiffer only. They are good but a CV will REMOVE visible dust and fine particles from your home, keeping it very clean and providing better air quality. I have a kick sweep in my kitchen. I don't use it as much as I expected but it is useful sometimes. Others have suggested one in the master bath and/or if you have pets, where the pets are fed. These are probably good ideas. If you haven't heard of Hide A Hose check it out - I still love mine after 4 years! HAH is perfect where there are no carpets. I also have a dedicated hose for cleaning the garage, cars and the pool deck.

We have had the same top of the line Oreck for about 10 years and use it throughout the entire house on all types of floors. It is light, gets into tight places and works great. Best part is it has a 21 year warranty. Each year we take it in for a check up and service and the store gives us a loaner for a week and then we pick ours back up. They replace any parts that are worn and it looks brand new. If anything should break on it, I just take it in and they fix it at no charge, regardless of how it broke. Things like plastic clips, loose screws, scratched housing, whatever.

We have over 2500 s.f. of hardwood in our home. I can't imagine the amount of Swiffer sheets I would need to use to clean my floor. For light dusting, I use a wide dust mop (sold in janitorial stores) -- it's probably about 3 feet wide and breezes through my floors. For more through cleaning, I use my central vac with the hardwood floor brush. Since we have a dog that loves to get little pawprints or water drips from her bowl all over the place, I periodically use a damp mop with only a couple drops of dish detergent in the bucket. I do a small area, then immediately dry thoroughly with large towel. I never use Murphy's. I would be very hesitant to use a vacuum because dirt gets embedded on the wheels and the weight of the vacuum along with that dirt may scratch the surface.
