Purchased a foxtail Palm tree, how long can I wait before planting?

Hello everyone,

This is my first post. I purchased a foxtail palm tree (about 9ft) from Lowes. Does anyone know how long I can keep it in the pot before planting? I intend to plant within the next 4-5 weeks. Just wondering whether or not it will thrive in the pot until then.

Any feedback would be greatly appreciated.

Assuming that you water it, it will be fine. Can probably go months. I generally hold container stock in the shade while awaiting planting, but at this time of year the sun is weak so it likely doesn't matter where you keep it.

do you mean repot it.. or plant it in the ground ..

big city location might help ...

the further you get into fall.. or even winter.. the more forgiving the weather ought to be ... if you are north of the equator ... so waiting if usually not a problem ... [are there lowes south of the equator.. lol] ...

the hardest thing to do.. is not overwater a large plant ...

presuming you are planting it in full sun.. leave it in full sun.. but it never hurts to shade the black pot.. which can overheat in direct hot sun ...just put something against the pot.. on the sun side ...

Where should I situate the palm plant? Right now it's placed in front of a west facing window and because it's early spring, the sky is cloudy so I have the window completely open. I think when it gets sunnier, I'll close the blinds. I have white honeycomb blinds that let soft light in. I'm just hoping it's enough light to keep the palm happy. Do you think I should move the plant back 8 feet from the window and just keep the window open?

If they're rootbound, by all means, go for it! If they aren't then you're welcome to change the soil and place in different, but same-sized pot. It just depends on what effort you have the time and desire for. Changing soil can help evict the possible pests. I like to water my plants before I repot/change soil and wet the new soil after the move. It kinda helps keep the roots in place and they're less brittle and sensitive. You don't have to do the pre-watering though.

Nope, many times internet facts can be misleading. I grow queens and grew a foxtail at one point. Queens will get slight frost damage at about 27F but can survive to about 20F or a bit less with considerable damage. It can take over a year for them to recover and have a full crown. I know this from experience. Because of this long recovery time period, an annual hard freeze (below 20F) would spell out death for a queen palm. Like David said, Foxtails will not tolerate frost at all. They are definately a strictly tropical palm. I lost mine to fungus after they experienced low 30s. Keep it as a potted plant on your porch or patio and bring it indoors in the winter. or you can use it as an annual if you'd like. Believe me, they do not survive in zone 9b, just like David said.

Can you post some photos? That might help with identifying the problem. Might be a bit hard to say why those holes are in there, but that would have let fungus in. Normally fungus wouldn't be able to get in that deep unless there was some sort of injury to the trunk. By the way, Foxtails aren't multi-trunking palms, you had 3 separate plants in that pot. Most probably the smaller one was too weak and was choked out by the stronger ones.

Nurseries and garden centers routinely hold plants in containers throughout the sales or growing season. And many garden with large containerized plants as well. Holding one until planting in a few weeks is no big deal.

Just follow proper watering protocol for your area and weather and you will be fine.
