I finished hooking the "Hebrew mat."

In March 2019 I posted at the KT requesting help with the Hebrew I wanted to hook in wool for a mat I was making for a younger cousin. I said when I finished the mat I'd post it here. Well, it took me long enough, but it's in the mail, on its way to my cousin in CT. She has no idea I've been working on it. Not only will she be surprised, but I think she'll have some fun getting it translated. It says (I hope!) beautiful cook.
When I started hooking the border I wondered if I'd made a mistake as it didn't seem to go with the center design at all. I started thinking of the mat as "Tel Aviv Meets Log Cabin," which I found amusing. Then I realized it fit my cousin, with her modern sophistication, artistic nature, domestic talents, and devotion to family.
It's made of all recycled wool taken from vintage clothing, much of it overdyed by me. The pale background looks in spots as though the lettering has bled into it, but that's just the way I dyed it. The mat is 10" square.

Personally, I wouldn't have ANY gardens if it weren't for that. Anyway... Now for a few questions...Where do you all get all your "free" stuff? What is freelancing? Yup, freecycle. There are a gagillion groups over on Yahoo. Search for freecycle, and your city or area or state, and you'll find one near you. You can set your groups to see the listings via emails, or just see them online, and it's searchable, too. VERY cool. For the bowling ball, just use silicone to glue the tiles on? Yup. GE II is a popular one. Can get it in the hardware section or in the craft section. I'm a cheapskate, so I like the 'grease gun' size, but if you prefer a small tube, it's available that way. I just finished stepping stones with tiles I bought at a craft store, so I have lots left over. Pictures, we like pictures! Would I have to grout the ball? If it will be outside, does it need to be sealed? It depends on your tesserae. I made one with glass globs, and silicone, and it's been outside in the snow with no grout, and no sealant, no problems. If I were to make another one, and used tiles, I'd probably grout it and seal it, and likely I might not leave it outside because I don't have a lot of experience with how grout holds up outside. Comments (50)I am in exactly the same place with my red oak floors :( my floors look just as orange as in the pictures... and the variations and wood grain are much more pronounced than I wanted. I have the flooring company coming in on Monday to put down the third coat of poly - do I have any options at this point? Or just a matter of it mattering less once I get more used to the new color...? I had this same level of shock and discomfort with my wall color (had to leave my apartment for the evening just to soothe myself!), but once they sanded the floors - I realized I loved the wall color, just that my old floor finish was clashing with it. Now after staining the floor - I am back to feeling they really clash... and I really wish I had just opted for no stain and a natural finish instead... I’d take that look over what I now have any day. At least - that’s how it feels right now. To the original poster - @lacollar - (or anyone else with a similar experience) - did you eventually get used to (or even fall in love with?! :)) your floors... even though at first it felt like the choice of stain color was a huge mistake? Comments (1)I'd say its a toss up. I have black hinges on my door, and chrome everywhere else. I have a few black knobs on a free standing cabinet. antique looking knobs on my vanity that match the metal of my very nice mirror. My plumbing fixtures and towel rack is chrome. The reason for the black hinges is because of the neighboring room and the need to coordinate the door with that room. I think it might look nice with a ORB hook. Can you place cutout dark paper on the location for the hook, and then put up a piece of aluminum as the chrome, take pictures, and decide over a few days. Thats what I would do.
