Vinyl verses fiberglass Help!
Comments (3)We just filled our new vinyl pool with water today. We chose vinyl because we had an inground vinyl pool at our previous home (18 years ago), and absolutely loved it. We considered fiberglass, but we were very limited on sizes, etc. The fiberglass pools we looked at had a maximum width of 16 feet, and we wanted more. Additionally, we wanted a large shallow end for volleyball, etc. Also, the liner choices were plentiful, so we were able to choose a beautiful dark blue "granite" which is very aesthetically pleasing....See MoreReplacement Windows Wood, Vinyl or Fiberglass?
Comments (82)For what it is worth, I thought I'd circle back on what we chose to do in case it helps anyone else. We love our wood windows and I just wasn't sold on replacing them with fiberglass yet. After lots of research I found Clear Image Glass in Issaquah, WA. (not compensated for mentioning them) The majority of my windows were structurally sound, but with some foggy spots. After a thorough inspection, we decided that most just needed new sills. They are made with Alaskan Yellow Cedar (better for NW elements if choosing wood) and depending on location in house chose LOE 366 or 272. Weathervane is the original manufacturer and not in business anymore, so in the areas we were adding windows, they built custom windows to match our existing exactly. The few areas with rot were fixed. It has been almost a year and we are super pleased. We were even able to keep our existing kitchen windows! New sills were half the cost (or less, depended on window). Custom windows were higher than other bids, but was worth it. For us, we were really happy to keep wood and the charm. Here are my kitchen windows, painted with new sills....See MoreVinyl or Fiberglass Windows?
Comments (21)In response to the original question, it really depends on your priorities for the project as well as your location (severity of your climate). The vinyl "expansion" issue as well as the "strength" is mostly propaganda. Here in WI we have vinyl windows in service that are airtight at 5 degrees below zero, and operate smoothly at 95 degrees on the sunny south side of the home. There are vinyl windows that have vastly superior ratings both thermally and structurally to Marvin. With that said, I don't think that there is a product in Marvon's entire lineup that is not well designed and manufactured, they simply aren't on the leading edge as far as energy efficiency is concerned, and again, I'd be careful about the weight given to expanision and strength talk. Based on your location, you won't likely have access to many of the better performing windows that are found in colder areas of the midwest and northeast (Sunrise perhaps), so something like the Essentials certainly rates higher on the list under those circumstances as a "vinyl alternative"....See MoreWindow Replacement Options (Vinyl or Fiberglass)
Comments (2)Plenty of other fiberglass windows outside of the Marvin line up. Some with far better thermal and air data. Sunrise makes a nice vinyl window that is available out there too....See MoreGlenda Miller-Clark
