It's October 2014. How is your build? Part 2
Comments (107)Well, it's onward and forward for us. Our house is looking so big at this point! I knew it was a big house, but it's hard to visualize from a blueprint how big your house will actually be. We are loving it though and have been very pleased with the progress so far. Framing is almost finished. The roofer is starting tomorrow. And the siding starts on Monday. Oh, and I forgot to mention that about a week and a half ago we almost lost our house. Our framers had just put up some very large trusses and had already left for the day when a huge wind storm hit. Luckily our excavator was still working at the site because it wasn't long before our walls and roof starting moving back and forth. He quickly called the framers back and they quickly tried to secure everything. There were braces everywhere and chains bolting trusses to the floor. Our framers were quite creative and they saved our house with minimal damage. We really do have the best framers working on our house and feel very blessed that our house is still standing! Anyways, here are the pictures for this month: Front of the house. I know a lot of people don't like garages that stick out from the house like this, but I love the way it's turning out for us. Comments (150)Went out to our build site today, and an alligator was sunning on the bank of the pond. I knew we had one, but I hadn't seen him yet. I'm from northern Michigan, so spanish moss and alligators are quite an adjustment. We have concrete in our trenches now and they're getting ready to set the block on the rebar. I can't wait to see framing go up. MFatt, I celebrate your hole with you! Jujubean, gorgeous setting! I admire all of you doing your own GCing. We have been living on a boat for 4 years, so we're not from this area, don't know the in's and out's and where to go to get stuff - for a variety of reasons I'm really more comfortable going with a builder. I'm really happy with the one we've chosen. But being with a builder means that I've been obsessing over getting all my selections made since June, because he wanted almost everything decided on before he broke ground. With very few exceptions everything is chosen and costed out. We need to buy our appliances before the end of the year in order to take advantage of the promo dishwasher package. So now I'm starting in on choosing and obsessing over the interior choices. Because we sold our house and moved to the boat 4 years ago, and have sailed +/- 8000 nm since then, we got rid of most of what we own. What we did keep is in storage, and all of the upholstery pieces I kept need reupholstering. I'm going from a very northern design sensibility with rich deep colors and patterns to a low country lighter palette. I really look forward to watching everyone go through the process and choose all of your materials and appointments. Comments (48)I thought I'd bump this back to page 1 with a small update. We are still looking to close the day before Thanksgiving. Almost all of the brick is complete, insulation is complete, and drywall is going up. I'll go inside tomorrow to take pics of the inside. It was extrememly dusty and messy when I took these pics today. Cabinets arrive next week, then we are in the home stretch! We are meeting with our GC tomorrow to discuss a resolution with him because he changed the front windows without even letting us know of the change. I'm a little disappointed in him and the windows, but noone could tell unless you saw the blueprint, at least I don't think. Do you notice anything? BDIB- Wow! The conservatory is looking great!
