hah I love "euro-lodge"! The hunting lodge of a duke around Turin had alot of murals and faux painting such as the huge plaster support columns were faux painted to look like huge marble columns (see, even then people wanted wanted marble where they couldn't make it happen lol) but the kitchen was the typical HUGE fireplace in the pre-stove times. The only other "euro-lodge" that I've been in is Dublin castle where everything is on a huge scale, even given the huge scale of the castle rooms, but alas the kitchen is the still the fireplace type. So no modern anything in either since people aren't actively living in them. But I thought you might be interested since one's Italian and one's Irish! If you google "interchangeable kitchen backsplash" you'll find a couple of articles on murals that can be swapped in and out, and there is a company that claims to be the only one to offer a product - a series of customizable boards that can be swapped in and out. I have no idea whether this is a reliable product or not, but it may help you find what you're looking for. Good luck.

Yes, work on the lighting. Leave the cabinets alone. The appliances are fine for now, let them age out on their own rather than wasting them in a landfill. Your floor is fine! Cpartist has great color suggestions - she has the artist's background for making them, too. Once you do lighting, and begin to decide on paint color, approach the backsplash. I personally dislike white subway tiles (reminds me of old dormitory bathrooms and dirty subway stations) but I'm a decided minority on that. But something less flashy than what you've got. Definitely change the hardware to metal.

Is that your kitchen ? IMO you need to get a new counter and paint the cabinets for sure with that very gray floor. Is that floor all through the house or only in the kitchen? I think I need more info.
