Kitchen facelift. Need help with backsplash.
Comments (28)Sure thing! It's a GE Profile range model JS968SKSS. It's about 20 months old and they don't make that model any more. IIRC retail on it was $1800 but believe it or not I bought it used off of Craigslist for $950 from a couple that was remodeling and converting to gas. It's in near new condition and was a great steal. I even had a professional mover pick it up for me and deliver it for $100. The new model is PS968SPSS with a retail of $2200.There is also the PS905SPSS which looks the same but has some different/less features for $1800. Had I not found the used oven I probably would of bought a Frigidaire Galley model FGES3065KF for $1600 at Lowe's. It looks very similar to the GE models and has all the same features (both are also convection) as the more expensive one if I remember except for the bridge burner. The Frigidaire also has a neat rack system. There is a huge price markup for ranges with front controls. A comparable Frigidaire (or even GE) range but with rear controls was about half price so I was having a hard time justifying the cost (I really hate rear controls and reaching over hot/boiling pots) so finding the used GE range made it a no brainer decision for me. I've only had it for a couple of months now and it's been great. The burners heat up FAST and the glass top is so easy to clean. The only downside is that the black top shows dust really easy. Good luck let me know you decide!...See MoreHelp- Light or dark countertops with white cabs in small kitchen?
Comments (19)Thanks, everyone! Wow, I really appreciate the thoughts, and the example kitchens, both of which are gorgeous. I'm going to be installing undercabinet lighting. And I may install recessed lighting and/or a pendant over the peninsula, but I'm waiting on that. I'll keep looking toward light counters... some of the granites that I have found i like in photos (kashmir white for instance) aren't readily available in my area (I think that its quarry closed down anyway). I've been having a difficult time finding a light granite that I really like but going out to look again today. I don't want to go too gray as an undertone but would prefer balance of warm/cool in the mix of colors. Or just quartz... So any suggestions on that, based on your experience, also appreciated! (Organic white Ceasarstone- check, I'll look at that one!) If I can't come up with a definite on the counter by tomorrow, I have to give a cabinet color.... given my Super White trim, and the fact that the kitchen has no light, I'm thinking something that blends with that but is not so stark white. Decorator white sound good?...See MoreSmall, Boring, Eyesore of a House Needs a Facelift
Comments (17)Just coming back to say that widening the deck/step area isn't necessarily a terribly expensive project. For instance, in my area, where the originals were all concrete and now are often crumbling, you see this a lot: So basically just an oversized, reinforced wooden box that goes over what is there and a separate assembly for the steps. I wouldn't want to do that for a full deck, but if you just want to widen what you have enough for safety…. I would also add a stair railing. Narrow wrought iron would have been the original choice if they'd put in railings when the house was new....See MoreKitchen Facelift Needed! What would you do?
Comments (24)That is a wide island. Do you like having such a wide island? If redoing floor or there's tile under island, maybe making it less wide would open up more possibilities. By doing this you may be able to add something on the wall where nothing is currently. Depending on the overall dimensions. Do you want a prep island with no seating? IF seating how many if you could choose? Which direction would you want people to sit in & near kitchen? Here's some general guidelines to keep in mind. Last photo minimum 12". I suggest at least as wide for a cookie sheet to have space to land it hot out of the oven There's a lot of space & potential. You must be excited. Definitely adjust the fridge from being too close to the wall on left....See MoreChris & Donna Barton
