Furniture Design Dilemma dining room

Custom Round Stone Dining Table Base

I'm researching for a round custom dining table made from a granite slab. We're exploring fabricating steel bases but I'm more interested in granite bases made from the same material as the top.

Who would make a granite base for a table? Obviously whoever fabricates the base would need to be confident about the stability of the table and I don't know if countertop fabricators will be able to do this. Example photos below for ideas- some are more simple than others.

- Granite 3cm Slab

- 6 ft round table

Any advice would be appreciated!

Go to a graite fabricator, but really there are granite tables already made you could buy. A 72” table is big and reallty heavy and definately needs a proper base .

In my opinion this is really a foyer table....not a dining table....it is tough to work with ...very difficult to move ...or put a rug under....glass dinnerware may even break if knocked over or dropped by accident...and the hard surface will probably be difficult to dine on with out placemats or table cloth and pad ...none of which really look right on this type of table...

Karezz, I am on the cell so my apologies if I am misread. I think u are onto something with the concern if one would be enough. For a seventy something inch square table they have used two of the bases. I bet for yours at 70 you would want two as well. Greater stability. Off the top of my head 48" tables seem appropriate visually and safety wise for the smaller base.

What do you think of this one? I have cherry cabinets so it would match and it seems pretty simple. I'm toying with the idea of just getting the table and then getting chairs made by Carrington Court as suggested. If you have any other furniture in the room, it will be tight, If the table and chairs are all you have, 60" will work -- 72" would probably feel cramped. The 60" leaves you 3 feet all around -- that give 2 feet for sitting and a foot leeway -- tight for walking past, but if you position the chairs so none back straight to a wall, it will give a little more clearance. At 72", you would have more room for 8 at the table, but just 30" beyond the table. You need at least 18-24" for chair clearance when sitting and that doesn't leave much walking space -- if that is important. If you have doorways and open walls, on 2 or 3 walls, you might be able to fudge some. As cooks pointed out, the legs for your table make a big difference on sitting space. If the legs come to or near the edge, they will dictate chair placement and may prevent you from really using all that space. A pedestal will allow you to use more or that space -- just make sure it is really sturdy and/or you won't have people hanging, sitting, pushing or such on the edges of the table so that it strains that support. (with 8, I am guessing you have chiildrena dn at least some guys who will be guys - at least until they've broken a few things and finally been taught to be kinder, in the house)

My thinking is that that many chairs with patterns will take away from the beautiful table. If you kept less chairs at the table, as Ida suggested, it might work. I would not bring in any gray. I honestly don’t think any of the covers would look better. The current color works well and lets the table be the star, the tufting is elegant and pretty, and they bring a nice soft, calm look in the middle of all of the leather furniture and stained wood … I guess I’m just not seeing the issue with them. To me, they don’t blend too much with the floor at all, due to the legs, and adding in another color and/or pattern will just look busy. I’d spend that money on new barstools instead.

Thanks for your thoughts! I've read this sentiment before on similar threads and I don't get it! People love granite countertops and nearly all countertops have eating areas built in where people eat most of their meals when not entertaining. And in a formal dining room, how often are you moving your table?

I'd love your thoughts before we make a big commitment

In a casual island set up...you usually fix a plate...get your drink and sit down and eat...at a table you have serving dishes..that are usually lifted even passed from one diner to another...wine glasses ...drinking glasses ...water glasses ...etc...etc...way different dining setting....as to never moving the dining table...in most formal dining rooms whenever a large gathering takes place ...the tables are often moved around...to be used for buffet dining or to add extra seating...etc....and lastly...if you are hearing this sentiment often ...isn’t that the info you were asking for?...most importantly you have given us no view or idea of your living space...in some settings this may work...in most it will be impractical
