Dining in the Round
Someone on the Buzz Board was searching for a round pedestal table yesterday, and it got me thinking about round dining tables. I remember seeing a feng shui dining room makeover somewhere once, and the existing rectangular table was replaced by a new round one.
I'm not going to pretend to be a feng shui expert by any means, but there are some advantages to a round table. For one thing, there is no head of the table seat, so all of the diners are seated as equals. A round table also makes conversations easier. It's kind of hard to eat and talk to a person who is right next to you. If the conversation goes on and on, you tend to get a stiff neck from having to turn your head 90 degrees just to chat. Unless you are a knight in King Arthur's Court, there's just a more casual atmosphere when seated at a round table. Also, there aren't any sharp edges to bang your hip on, which I tend to do on my rectangular dining table every other day when I'm cutting through the dining room in a hurry!

A classic Saarinen tulip table is a modern classic that never goes out of style.
This table can fit into a smaller space and still provide a separate dining area. Note the interesting base.
This round marble topped table coordinates well with the arches and curved ceiling in this room.
Again, the round shape of the table goes well with the architecture of the room.
A globe pendant works well with a round table.
This is an example of a round table with legs on the outside. It makes cramming an extra seat in a little more awkward, but it has a beautiful silhouette.
I think this is a drop-leaf table, which can be backed up behind a sofa or against a wall when the flaps are down - it's the best of both worlds!

This round table fits in well with the traditional colonial style of the room.
Another great light fixture/round table pairing.
And another.
There's a lovely contrast between the round table top and the strong lines of this room (which are softened by that incredible stone wall).
