Revised Post: Sun and shade path new with photographs
I have revised this original post.
ThIs path is about 30 feet long from the lawn edge into the small woodland garden. The 'corners' of the path near lawn get strong west sun starting mid July and turn the hostas planted there to toast.
Path is now planted with h.Lemon Lime. It is not working. I
Help me think through what hosta will work better. I thought of a few 'flexible' criteria:
Medium size. Medium to fast growth or "bulk up" Not looking for 'specimens' but what looks good en mass, moderately drought tolerant They will be watered as often as necessary in Year 1. After that, as often as I can manage.
Something that won't burn in the mid-late summer sun, but will do well in light to moderate shade as well
I have about 15 Junes that could make big divisions. I wonder if they will just fade into the background when viewed from across the lawn.
I have several other hostas whose names are lost. But I have enough of each to divide for the path.
As for the Sunny-to-burn corners I think matching planters with full sun annuals or even big grasses would work or again, a hosta with sun-shade tolerance.

Morning Shade/Afternoon Sun - what should I plant?
Comments (20)The purple flowers at the top of the fence are from Clematis Etoile Violette, a viticella clem that is very easy to grow. It is a very dark purple which is set off well by the very pale pink of the New Dawn rose. The picture was taken June 14, 2007. The bluer purple flowers at the bottom in the shade created by the rose are Zwanenberg Blue Spiderwort (Tradescantia). I just realized that I didn't show you any of the hybrid daylilies that are in the niddle portions of the long narrow bed. Didn't want you to think that there are only the orange ditch daylilies (Hemerocallis fulva) that are shown in the 1st picture! The fulvas (spreading not clumping dls) are in the northwest corner in almost total shade due to the northern exposure and an overhead tree. These started blooming this year on June 10th. The dozen hybrid daylilies in this narrow bed are all new plants and eventually I'll have to move about half of them somewhere else when they grow too crowded. So don't be too concerned about overcrowding your bulbs - most all of us overcrowd something sometimes and then have to move things around. LOL I also wanted to mention that I tried to stagger the daylily bloom (mostly July bloom) in between the early June blooming Asiatic lilies & the late July blooming Orienpets, but tried to keep most things in the same red/yellow/cream color scheme because there is bound to be some overlap. The only exception was the New Dawn rose which is at the far south end near the fence - because that's the only space I have that is big enough. She can put out 20 foot long canes which I wrap around the corner walls on both sides. She has one main flush in early June and some scattered later bloom as does the clematis. The rebloom clashes a bit with the daylilies strong colors, but not enough to matter much. I am just mentioning all this to give you an idea of the progression that goes on in the bed through the season, even though it is a very narrow bed. I still have one cream-colored daylily , copper colored helenium, Orange Perfection phlox (not really orange in color) in bloom, along with some bronze-colored mums that are just starting & some rebloom on the spiderworts and clemmies. Oh, and I forgot to mention some blue berries on the Variegated Porcelain vine which is on the wall between two of the clems. Here are some of the daylilies. With various dls blooming at slightly different times, I get some nice punches of color over a period of about 6 weeks. Not boring waiting and watching for each to show its stuff. Devo, with the number of photos I take of my neos I couldn't help but get a good photo occasionally. You have been spared from many of my other poor attempts I assure you. Not too many neos in flower yet. I expect to be busy from about November on if the main flowering season is the same as last year. atmccmn, don't give up, Prince of Darkness is worth waiting for. As for the Grande x Concentrica cross I haven't tested it in too much sun yet, maybe this summer. Bob, I tend to run a fine line with the amount of sunlight I give my plants. It is good for the colour but can be a disater for some. I do have an number of bleached and sunburnt neos where I have gone too far looking for that extra wow factor. Lisa, the mixture of sun and shade is a necessity at my place as my shade house is crammed full of many, many seedlings. Japie, as I mentioned earlier with the number of snaps I take I have to get some good ones. As for you having problems with photos I think you are being modest after seeing some of your beaut photos on previous threads. jaga, as you see I haven't put myself in any of the backgrounds. After my comments on your previous thread on vreisea I wasn't going to give you the chance for payback. As for the temperature they are grown at? The best answer I can give is that Brisbane has a sub tropical climate, the summers are usually hot and humid average max 30cel(85F), aver min 20cel(70F).The winters are mild aver max 20cel(70F) aver min 10cel(50F). bradisha, Yes I'm really proud of that Tangerine, it has really coloured up well. Comments (20)Thanks again, especially for the candytuft ID, they are the stars of the spiral right now but they're starting to go to seed. I have a fountain in the front yard, and although I agree it would look great I wouldn't want to deal with the hassle in that particular spot. Birds love fountains, consequently they need to be cleaned frequently and it always involves splashing a lot of water on the ground and walking around the fountain a bit. Maybe I could get a birdbath and hook it to the irrigation system, but a statue would be easier and require less maintenance. I think I'm a one fountain person, a second is not something I relish taking care of but I wouldn't dream of getting rid of the one I have. Most recently a bench has been added to the garden, I realized that the place where the path brushes the raised bed is the coolest and most comfortable spot to hang out so I mentioned it to the DH and next thing I knew we had a new bench. Comments (11)Ha! Ha! Gillian ! I have goutweed just around the corner from this area. All I'd need to do is remove one of those small rectangle concrete blocks and say "Come On In ! " I love my goutweed, but I think it might create trouble =:) I guess it's another trip to the garden centre. My favourite place. They won't be surprised to see me, again! 3 years agothank you Dee..here's a close up next to heuchera Palace Purple..they're a joy in the spring..mine don't get full sun but from what I've read the yellow hostas darken even in full sun..I like the "lime" green color too..

3 years agoInstead of patriot, consider Strip Tease or similar. Not too flashy, not to boring. June would have a similar effect but smaller. Just choose one you love and divide. Also, I agree that you have to water. Try to avoid plants with mediocre substance, they show damage from heat and sun first.

3 years agoI used to have a few Patriots but eventually got rid of them. The leaves got ugly way too early in the season. It happened multiple years in multiple locations.
Paul's Glory always catches my eye at the hosta store.
Captain Kirk has been a good variegated medium for me. The yellow gets whiter as the season progresses depending on the sun levels. I am noticing a golden dicentra in the background which always looked good with it. I think I see some Carex Ice Dance in the pot.
Do you want all hosta?
Golden Tiara is a good quick spreader. Smaller scale but fills in nicely.

That is Frances Williams on the right. I don't recommend it. More Carex Ice Dance on the left. Cutie dwarf spruce in the rear.

You would have to do your vinegar drenches all up and down the path. love Wendy’s suggestions.........perhaps a mixture of colors and textures would be nice. For sun, you said you would not mind green and white in mass.....check out Queen Josephine. Sun tolerant, Small to medium, nicely shaped green leaves With yellow to creamy edging as year progresses. TC by Mark Zilis and cultivated by Bob Kuk. It has violet flowers. I added one to my sun bed year but all the sun tolerant ones struggled to adjust to their new environment and had to be shaded for a while.
