How do I save my broken aloe?

Hello,

I have my aloe for many years now. It started to grow weak so i moved it on my window. Seems like it liked that and has some new rosettes. Today my mom wanted to look at how well it had grown. Unfortunately the main stem was still weak and it broke. i put the root system and every rosette in water. Can you tell me any tips on how to help my aloe?

It doesnt. I just put them there to grow roots. I'll post updates when I plant them in soil. 😁

No water pls! It could rot quite fast in water. Take it all out asap. I will survive without water better than in the water.

Read thruTHESE THREADS, very first post is about aloe (different than yours, but same should work for it).

I am not sure about the roots. Just pot them up into well draining mix and maybe plants will grow.

Oh how sad. I hate when that happens. Looks like too much water from the color of the stem. Try planting the parts with the leaves in dry, quick draining potting soil and don't water them for at least 10 days...maybe longer. Indirect sunlight. Warm spot in the house. The root and stem don't look salvageable. Good luck.

If it's not to late I'd like to pls disagree a bit w/ the advice given above. I wouldn't wash the roots nor do anything that gets the plant wet. Wetting it is unnecessary, I always crumble the mix off w/ my fingers or if needed, some small tools, mini rakes or a fork, but not water, especially if I'm concerned w/ root rot. Yes, cut away any soft tissue or anything black, break off any dry brittle roots, leave it out for a couple of days. Then get some household Cinnamon & sprinkle that on the base of each plant, then shake off the excess & pot up DRY. Don't water it in, just bang in against the table once or twice to settle the mix. That should give them a good Start, hopefully you've got some fast draining mix or at least Cactus & Succulent soil w/ 50% added perlite. Water after a couple of days, Good luck. Sorry to be redundant on the Cinnamon, seems we were posting around the same time.

Best bet is just to leave it alone exposed to air and let it dry out and scab over on its own if it can. Tape keeps the damaged joint damp, bacteria invades the wet tissue and it just rots under the tape. Whether it will heal or not all depends on how complete the break is. Dave

It's desperate for more light & that soil is far too water retentive. I'd get a bag of perlite or pumice & mix it equal parts w/that soil (50/50 each). Pls go to the Cactus & Succulent Forum nearby (see top of page) & read up on Aloes, them needing a lot of light, fast draining mixes (soils), etc. Also plant it higher up in the pot pls. after improving the mix. Don't water often (not more than every 10 days or so). Sorry to say it will not improve w/out more light & corrected soil. Expose it to more light gradually. What's that stick or branch or woody stem?

The yard does not have to look like a recycle salvage- the cheap/recycled pots can be camouflaged with the much nicer wood planters just like garden nursery pots. In the case of using the square storage bins or kitty litter buckets, they fit/fill a bit nicer into a square wooden box surround than round pots can. Garbage cans don't have to look garbage either- there are attractive ones out there. Or at least ones that more decorative or meant to be seen and look like pots and don't necessarily need to be hidden. They can also be handy for container growing stuff with deep roots. I container grow horseradish and salsify, and just couldn't find any pots that were big and deep enough till I found a nice trio of plain round heavy plastic garbage cans- they look a lot like the big pot on the left in the OP pic, only they came in black.

Hello again and thank you for your tips.
I took the rosettes out of the water as soon as I read your comments. I've put them in a pot with rock, I dont have any kind of dried soil. Now most of them are starting to grow roots.
I still wonder if I shoud keep the snapped root. For now it's in a small glass without any rocks or soil and I wont water it.

Hi, Ema. Aloes are succulents and hold a lot of water in their leaves, which is why you cannot overwater them. The root system on one of my larger aloes rotted when 'someone' placed it in a soil that was hard and compacted. It was actually like cement when it dried. Because it was out in the yard I hadn't noticed until it was too late.

Anyway, I removed all the mushy leaves and left it out in open air [no soil, no rocks] and out of direct sun for ten days. After it sealed / calloused over, I prepared a very high draining, loose substrate using a small 8-qt bag of purchased succulent soil to which I added about a cup of course grade construction / river sand [do not use beach sand ... think tiny rocks] and a cup of perlite. I dampened the substrate and placed the aloe in the pot ... Just placed it on the soil. That's it. It remained on my porch, where it would not be disturbed, not get rained on, no direct sunlight while it rooted. DO NOT water until after about four to six weeks, when you see signs of new growth. Succulents without roots have no way to uptake water ... They will only rot again.

Once my aloe rooted and showed signs of new growth, I watered it and slowly began moving it closer and closer to full sun ... a little at a time so it doesn't burn. Burns can also cause rot. I'm happy to report that not only did it survive, it put out three pups within the first six months.
